July 2, 2014 — After winning their first two games in the Area 1 District 6 tournament, the 11-12-year-old Olive Hill All-Stars met Morehead in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket at Morehead City Park.
Morehead used three home runs and solid contact at the plate to hand Olive Hill their first loss of the tournament, an 8-1 decision on Monday night.
Morehead’s Nick Eastham led off the game with a homerun to centerfield. Devin Davidson smacked a two-run roundtripper off the scoreboard in the second inning and Preston Adkins followed with a two RBI home run in the third frame.
“We made three bad pitches,” Olive Hill Manager Rick Callahan said about the three homeruns. “We kept it pretty close through three innings but the longball really got us.”
On the flipside, Olive Hill managed just seven hits in the game, but only five of those came against Morehead starter Devon Stevens. He gave up one run, a single by Trace Tackett in the first inning to tie the game at 1-1.
“We didn’t hit the ball well,” Callahan said. “We were either hitting the ball right at somebody or getting a little under it the whole game. (Stevens) is a really good pitcher. We just could not get guys on in front of the good hitting we have when we needed to.”
Morehead churned out nine hits, four of them for extra base hits. After scoring their first five runs on home runs, Morehead used three straight singles by Davidson, Will Adams and Eastham to centerfield to start the fourth inning. Eastham’s base hit scored a run. Morehead used two fielder’s choices to score their next two runs to make it 8-1.
“They’ve got a really good hitting team,” Callahan said. “They have some guys that can really put it to the fence and they challenge you the whole game. We knew that when we got here because in the game before us, we saw they had the ability to hit for power.”
