July 2, 2014 — The 11-12-year-old Olive Hill All-Stars began the Area 1 District 6 baseball tournament at Morehead City Park against Lewis County on Friday.
Olive Hill used solid pitching and a lot of offense at the plate to defeat Lewis County 10-2.
“It is very hard to win this first game whether it’s the jitters or we’re not playing well to start but I’m so proud of these kids,” Olive Hill Manager Rick Callahan said. “We’ve got a young team.”
Lewis County put up the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning after Daulton McGowan reached on an error that scored Brayden Caudill.
Olive Hill had no trouble from that point on. After Ed Clary drew a leadoff walk and Logan Berry’s double to centerfield, Cade Carter’s single scored Clary to tie the game. Berry give Olive Hill the lead for good, scoring on a wild pitch.
Braden Leadingham’s extra base hit added another run and he also scored on a wild pitch to give Olive Hill a 4-1 lead.
They would add another run in the fourth inning off a Trace Tackett single.
Lewis County had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with the bases loaded with two outs. Brandon Bentley, with one swing, could have tied the game up with a home run but Tackett came in relief and got Bentley to pop out to end the threat.
“That was the play of the game,” Callahan said. “He was running out of pitches and with the pressure of having the bases loaded, he made a crucial play that really saved the game for us because if that ball falls, everyone is safe and they get the momentum back.”
Olive Hill put the game away in the sixth inning. Leading just 5-2 going into the final frame, they put up five runs on five hits. David Jessie’s pinch-hit single scored a run. Trevor Callahan’s single scored another run and Ben Wilburn’s double scored another teammate. Two errors would push across two more runners.
