April 17, 2013 — The East Carter baseball team finished third in the Jack B. Calhoun Memorial Classic over the weekend in Grayson.
The Raiders defeated Sheldon Clark 10-0 in five innings on Friday but lost to Rowan County 6-4 and Letcher County Central 6-5 on Saturday.
Coach Jeremiah Shearer is hoping that the setbacks this past weekend will serve as a wakeup call for his team.
“I was very disappointed overall in our performance,” Coach Jeremiah Shearer said. “We didn't have good energy. The players felt like they could show up and win, but they realize now they have to come ready to play everyday.”
The Raiders did everything well against the Cardinals, getting timely hitting and pitching. East got doubles from Jesse James, Austin Floyd and Cody McDavid. James had two RBI in the contest.
On Saturday against Rowan, the Raiders committed their only errors of the game and the Vikings took advantage to come away with the two run victory. Conner Staton and Chandler Adams had RBIs for East.
“With the exception of the Rowan game, I thought we played great defensively,” Shearer said.
Derek Keller had an RBI and Zack Cathey pushed across runs for East in the 6-5 loss to the Cougars.
East Carter did bounce back on Monday, defeating Russell 13-5. The Raiders (8-10) will travel to Ashland on Thursday.
