Boyd ends East softball’s season

June 5, 2013 — East Carter was coming off the heels of winning their first 62nd District Championship in five years and were playing on their home field for the 16th Region Tournament. However, Boyd County made themselves at home as the Lady Lions eliminated East 12-2 in five innings.

Boyd County got a 3-for-4 performance from Emily Stewart, who scored three runs and drove in another for the Lady Lions. Stewart and Bri Crooks each reached base safely all four trips to the plate.

“We know how good Boyd County can be,” Manager Derek Calhoun said. “Those errors kind of got down on ourselves. But we had chances, we just couldn’t get that timely hit to steal back some of that momentum.”

But the errors mounted for East as Boyd County took a 7-0 lead after two innings with only one registered hit. The Lady Raiders committed four errors, and gave up two walks and a hit batter.

The lead ballooned to 12-0, and East had to dig out of the hole because of miscues in the field.

“It was just like the first time we played them,” Calhoun said. “We made too many mistakes to give up four runs in the first inning on at least two errors. That’s going to get you beat against a good team.”

East Carter got the offense going in the bottom of the fifth inning, down 12-1 when Tori Qualls smacked a single to score Abbie Jackson.

The Lady Raiders were without two starters, including the team’s lone senior Heather Withrow.

“It hurt me and the rest of the team that she couldn’t be here,” Calhoun said.

The Lady Raiders have not beaten Boyd County in ten years, since a 5-3 victory in the first round of the 16th Region Tournament in 2003, a span of ten games.
