East falls in semis of EKC Tournament

Dec. 18, 2013 — It was a wild night for high school boys basketball Wednesday night in Morehead.

The East Kentucky Conference semifinals were played with both Morgan County and Fleming County winning their games by three points.

East Carter would attempt a late rally but the Cougars would hold on for a 64-61 victory over the Raiders

East was down by as many as 10 points throughout the second half but would mount a comeback to get back in the game.

Morgan’s Matthew Ross with a basket and free throw late in the fourth quarter helped the Cougars hold on for the victory. Ryan Adams led four players in double figures with 18 points and ten rebounds in the victory.

Connor Greene’s 26 points led the Raiders in scoring.

“I’m really pleased with the way we’re competing and playing tremendously hard,” East Coach Brandon Baker said. “We had a dry run in the second period that put us behind and if we could get some baskets in that run, things could have been different. It’s a credit to our guys for coming back and having a shot to tie it to get to overtime. I’m proud of the energy.”

Cole Brammer chipped in with 10 points. He got a shot off at the end of the game that rimmed out that would have sent it into overtime.

“We had a chance to extend the game but that’s just the nature of the business,” Baker said. “It was a good look but just didn’t go in. We just have to get more games under our belt and get more experience and become a little more seasoned.”

Jordan Perry had 20 points to pace Morgan County.

“They made us earn it and it’s a sign of a well-coached basketball team,” Morgan County Coach Matthew Perry said. “Coach Baker does a great job with his kids. We didn’t quit though. We kept fighting and made some big plays down the stretch for us to get the win. But we could have easily have lost this game because in that last few minutes the will of want was more on their side than ours.”
