Diamondbacks slither past Grayson All Stars

By Leeann Tanner - Staff Writer

The Grayson All Stars headed to Morehead last weekend for the Fifth Annual Arby’s Classic Baseball Tournament. On Saturday morning, Grayson met the Diamondbacks from Greenup, losing 15-0 in a mercy called four innings.

In the top of the first, Grayson took the first at bat. Zack Cathey ground out and Cole Boggs struck out swinging. Jesse James smacked a single, which was almost a double, but James thought better of facing the baseman and was nearly caught in a run down. Jalen Nicholes struck out swinging, sending Grayson to the field.

With James on the mound, the Diamondbacks sent lead off batter Bobby Thomas up. Thomas popped out to Nicholes at third. Zac Alberts struck out swinging and Joseph Bailey singled to Cathey. Justin Fraley doubled and Bailey came home on a double by Brandon Boggs. Chris Woodar singled to push in one RBI, but was left on when Levi Stalder ground out.

Kyle Knipp ground out in the top of the second. The Diamondback pitcher threw hit to whiz by Josh Bush and Caleb Jesse, who both struck out swinging. Alex Jones led off with a double for the Diamondbacks and came in on a single by Kenton Boggs. Back at the top of the lineup, Thomas singled but Alberts popped out to James. Bailey doubled, sending in two RBIs. Fraley also doubled, pushing in one and Boggs sent one sailing over the fence for one run scored and one RBI. Woodar struck out swinging and Stalder smacked a double to left field. A pop out to Cathey by Jones ended the second inning.

Back at the plate, Grayson wanted a rally, but was unable to answer the 8-0 score. Jacob Conley and Cale Boggs both struck out and Cathey ground out at first. The Diamondbacks came to win, and a triple by Alberts sent in two RBIs. Bailey doubled with one RBI and Fraley ground out, but pushed in one. Boggs sent another homer over and Woodar doubled. Stalder sent a home run sailing over the center field fence and Grayson put in relief pitcher Bush. Jones ground out to Knipp at first and K. Boggs hit a single. Thomas popped out to Cathey in center field to end the inning.

Grayson faced a new pitcher, Diamondbacks’ Bailey, for the fourth inning. Cole Boggs walked, but was tagged out stealing second while James struck out swinging. Nicholes struck out and the game was called on a mercy.
