“Hop” Brown Camp hits Olive Hill

By Leeann Tanner - Staff Writer

More than 70 children, from preschool to eighth grade, worked in the West Carter High School Gymnasium last week, during the 23 Annual John “Hop” Brown Lady Comet Round Ball Camp.

The boys and girls practiced the fundamentals of basketball at eight different stations throughout the week.

“We had three contests each day,” Lady Comet Coach Von Perry said. “Free throws, knockout, and hot shot. The person with the most points at the end of the week was Camper of the Week in each age division.”

Each camp day ended with team games, coached by members of the Lady Comets basketball team.

“I had one girl who said, ‘Now I understand what you go through,’” Perry said. “They get to see what it’s like to be an official or a coach. They get a better understanding of the different roles that are involved in this game.”

Campers have daily prizes and incentives that they work for each day, Perry said. And throughout the week, each camper seemed to have fun and improve their fundamental basketball skills.

“They always did what they were asked to do and we didn’t have any problems with the campers at all,” Perry said. “They wanted to be there and they learned and did what was expected of them.”

The winners for the week-long competition were: Preschool and Kindergarten Individual Winners: Free Throw, Jackson Bond Hot Shot and Knockout Winner Orry Perry and Camper of the Week Kinsey Duncan.
