Hughes beats Everman for third Classic crown in past four years

Ian Hughes battled past Dustin Everman of Grayson, 6-1, 6-4, to win the men’s singles divison of the annual Grayson Summer Classic Tennis Tournament, Sunday afternoon at the new East Carter Middle School tennis courts.

Other winners in this weekends Grayson Summer Classic:

•Mens Singles 1st round:  Addison Whitt (West Liberty) over Donnie Kinnan (Ohio) 6 – 2, 6 - 3

•Mens Singles Quarterfinals:  Addison Whitt over Jason White (2) (Lexington)6 – 4, 6 – 2  “Jason said he had not seen Addison play so well. He hits everything very clean.”

Mark Kidd (1) defeated Tony Hopper (Hanging Rock) 6 – 1, 7 - 5

Dustin Everman (Grayson) over Denver Brown (Morehead)6 – 2, 6 - 0

Ian Hughes (Grayson) defeated Jim Powell (Ashland) 6 – 0, 6 - 0

•Mens Semifinals:

Dustin Everman defeated Mark Kidd (1) 6 – 4, 6 - 3

Ian Hughes over Addison Whitt 6 – 2, 6 - 0

•Mens Singles final Ian Hughes defeated Dustin Everman 6 – 1, 6 – 4

•Mens Doubles quarterfinals:

Denver Brown & Jim Powell defeated Charlie Billups (Ashland) & Bill Hayes (Grayson) 6 – 1, 6 – 0 (in the rain)

Joe Frye (Ashland) & Michael Quade (Ashland)over John McGuire (Grayson) & Donnie Kinnan 6 – 3, 6 – 2 (delayed in first set because of rain)

•Mens Doubles semifinals Mark Kidd & Addison Whitt beat Denver Brown & Jim Powell 6 – 1, 6 – 4

Joe Frye & Michael Quade defeated Dustin Everman & Jeff Porter 6 – 3, 6 – 3

•Mens Doubles Finals Joe Frye & Michael Quade beat Mark Kidd & Addison Whitt 6 – 0, 7 – 5 Frye & Quade also won in 2006 Open division. Kidd & Whitt were 2 time champions in 2006 (Intermediate division) & 2007.

•Womens doubles:

Morgan Hayes (Grayson)& Shae Criswell (Grayson) defeated Darlene Perry (Grayson) & Debbie Meenach (Grayson) 6 – 3, 6 - 2

•Junior singles:  (all from Grayson) Paige Porter champion  Tanner Sammons runner up

Paige Porter defeated Tyler Kouns 8 – 0, Tanner Sammons 8 – 3, Ranita Greer 8 – 1

Tanner Sammons defeated Tyler Kouns 8 – 2, Ranita Greer 8 – 1

Ranita Greer defeated Tyler Kouns 8 - 0

•Mixed doubles (round robin)(all from Grayson):  Ian Hughes & Shae Criswell champions  Jeff Porter & Morgan Hayes runners up 6 – 2, 6 – 4

Hughes & Criswell defeated Jim & Jeannie Lacock 6 – 1, 6 – 0

Porter & Hayes beat the Lacocks 6 – 3, 6 – 0

•Beginners Clinic

24 different kids came to the 4 day clinic. This is more than twice the number of usual participants. The warm weather did not deter many kids 15 came to all 4 days. The kids went home with racquet bags, racquets, visors, shirts, and other tennis gear to further their tennis futures.

•Free Lessons

The East Carter Tennis Team and Boosters Club will be giving free lessons for kids 4 – 18 years old  on 2 Saturdays this summer. Saturday June 28 from 10-11 at the Middle School Courts, and Saturday, July 19 from 10-11 also. Bring a racquet or we will let you borrow one.

Paid Lessons

A teaching pro from the Ashland Tennis Center comes to the East Carter Middle School courts every Thursday at 6:30. For more information call the Ashland Tennis Center at 329-2245 and ask for Don Webb or come see him on Thursday.

Free League

Every Monday evening through the summer, we will be having tennis league play starting at 5:00 at the East Carter Middle School courts. Participants can come by any time after that – some league participants will begin play as late as 7. The cost is free, but please bring a new can of tennis balls. For more information or to join the league contact Dustin Everman 316-0932.
