This past Saturday saw the Warriors of West Carter 7th and 8th grade boy’s basketball teams capture the OVC Small School Tournament Championship. Both teams are back-to-back champions as they captured the same championship last year.
In the opening round the 7th grade warriors started off as the umber 2 seed facing Wurtland Middle School. Behind the sharp shooting of Ryan Stallard (15 Points), Kyle Brown (9 points), and Dustin Black (8 points) the Warriors walked away with a 39 – 26 victory. In the semi-finals the Warriors out scored the Raceland Rams 30 – 21 behind Kyle Brown’s 20 points and Ryan Stallard’s 10 point.
In the 7th grade championship game the Warriors squared off against the Lions of Lewis County. After splitting the regular season games with the Lions the Warriors came out determined to win the championship. After taking a 5 – 4 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lions came roaring back to take a 16 – 14 half time lead. The 2nd half belonged to the Warriors after turning up the defensive pressure outscoring the Lions 21 – 8 with the score ending at 35 – 24. The Lions were lead in scoring by Kyle Brown with 24 points and Dustin Black with 10 points. The 7th grade Warriors ended the season with a 14 – 3 conference record and a total record of 21 wins and 9 loses.
In the opening round of the tournament, the 8th graders started as the number one seed facing a depleted Raceland Ram squad winning 64 – 25. Leading the way in scoring was Derek Lawson with 144, Brett Tackett with 13 and Travis Duvall with 10 points. IN the semi-finals the Warriors of West Carter squared off with Fairview Middle School. Behind the hot shooting of Kyle Cundiff with 15 points and Cody Stamper’s 10 points the Warriors best Raceland 52 - 36
In the 8th grade championship contest the Warriors squared of against the Dragons of Fallsburg Middle School. The Dragons opened the game with a 1st quarter lead of 9 – 8 but the rest of the game belonged to the Warriors. West Carter outscored the Dragons during the final three quarters to capture their 2nd straight championship 45 – 36. The Warriors were lead in scoring by Kyle Brown with 18, followed by Derek Lawson with 9, B.J. Garvin and Brett Tackett with 5 each, Cody Stamper with 3 and Travis Duvall rounding out the scoring with 2 points. Making the All Conference Team for the West Carter Warriors was Brett Tackett, Cody Stamper, B.J. Garvin and Derek Lawson. The 8th grade Warriors end up with a perfect 17 and 0 conference record and a total record of 27 wins against 4 loses.
