Back-to-back

By Kyle Brown

On February 16, 2008 the West Carter Middle School 7th and 8th grade Warriors became back to back champions of the OVC Tournament. The tournament was held at Wurtland Middle School. Other teams in the OVC besides West Carter are Wurtland, Fairview, Raceland, Bath, Lewis, Elliott, McKell, Fallsburg.

All the players worked hard throughout the year to improve in order to make this championship a reality. We also had great coaches in Bill Tackitt, Casey Lowe and Ronnie Cooley.

Here’s how we got there…

In first round play on February 9th the 7th grade played Wurtland. West won 39-26. Scoring for West were Ryan Stallard 15, Kyle Brown 9, Dustin Black, 8, Ricky Hamm 3, Matthew Patrick 2 and Justin Ratliff 2.

In the Championship game the 7th grade played Lewis. “At half time we were down by 4 but we hustled on defense and forced them into several turnovers. We pushed the ball up the floor in transition which led to several baskets for us,” said 7th grader, Kyle Brown. West won 35-24. Scoring for West were Kyle Brown 24, Dustin Black 10 and Kyle Stone 1.

In the 8th grade championship game West defeated Fallsburg 45-36. “Fallsburg played us tough in regular season and we knew that they would be tough to beat but we came out and played team ball and did what the coaches told us to do and we won!” said BJ Garvin. Scoring for West were Kyle Brown 18, Derek Lawson 9, BJ Garvin 5, Brett Tackett 5, Cody Stamper 3, Kyle Cundiff 3 and Travis Duvall 2.
