West guys go 1-1 on the road

By Leeann Tanner - Staff Writer

The West Carter Comets went 1-1 on the road last week, moving their record to 6-12 on the season.

On Tuesday, the Comets fell to Bath County, 67-60.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 16-12 lead in the first and West dug a hole in the second. Bath was on top 37-22 at the half. The Comets out scored the Wildcats 19-11 in the third and 19-17 in the fourth, but were unable to grab the win.

“We battled back but couldn’t pull it out there at the end,” Coach Jeremy Webb said. “We got out of sequence on the offensive end and allowed Bath to get open shots on the defensive end. When you do that against good teams they are going to make you pay for it.”

Kyle Brown led the Comets in scoring with 20 points. Cody Stamper and Harrison Bond had 10 each while Derrick Lawson put up nine, leading the team in rebounding with 11. Patrick Eldridge had nine and Justin Jarrell put up eight. Overall, the Comets hit 48-percent from the field and nailed 11-for-17 at the line.

West’s guys had the chance to bounce back as winter weather cancelled their Saturday match up with Bourbon County. At press time the game had not been rescheduled.

Monday night, the Comets hit the road again to take a 66-54 win over Boyd County.

West jumped out to an early 15-8 lead in the first quarter and out scored the Lions 13-11 in the second to lead by 9 at the half. The Comets outscored Boyd by two in the third quarter and one in the fourth for the win.

“We maintained an eight to 12 point lead through most of the game,” Webb said. “Boyd is a good defensive team and I have to give them credit. They played with intensity and enthusiasm, which means they wanted to stay in the game. They did a good job of that.”

Lawson led the team with a double-double 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bond and Aaron Rayburn each put up 11 while Eldridge, Stamper and Jarrell each had eight. Corey Bradley put up four and Travis Duvall sank one from the field.

Overall, the Comets hit 46-percent from the field and went 14-for-21 at the charity stripe.

West traveled to Fleming County Tuesday (after press time) to face the 10-6 Panthers.

“Fleming is a very physical and aggressive team,” Webb said in a pre-game interview. “They play man-to-man and do a good job rebounding. They have a solid team and it will be tough to play them on the road.”

The Comets return to their home court on Thursday to face Morgan County. West took down the Cougars in the EKC Tournament, 56-33.

“It is the last game regarding seeding in the district,” Webb said. “They are playing well now and any time you play Morgan you are in for a battle.”

The West vs. Morgan game is the nightcap for a girl-boy doubleheader. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. for the boys’ game.
