Local Little League teams are in action!
It’s early May and already hundreds, if not thousands, of pint-size legs are zipping around the local ball diamonds in Grayson and Olive Hill; Little League season is well underway in both communities.

Boggs hits hole-in-one
Randy Boggs of Grayson visited the Fairway River in Links Golf Course in Rayland,Ohio over the weekend and hit a hole-in-one on hole 13.

The East and West Carter track teams competed in the Eastern Kentucky Conference meet on Saturday at Rowan County High School.

Raiders rough up Rowan County, 9-1
The East Carter Raiders traveled to Rowan County on April 22 and returned to Grayson with the convincing 9-1 win.

In yesterday's tennis match vs. West Carter at the East Carter Middle School courts, East Carter boys won 4 - 0 and the girls won 1 - 0.

It was a cross-county soccer twin bill battle Monday night and the clubs from East Carter Middle School scored the series sweep from their kicking counterparts from West Carter.

East tennis serves up early-season success
The East Carter Tennis Team played in these matches in the last week. In Monday’s tennis match versus Raceland, played at East Carter Middle School Courts, the first official high school tennis match played on the home courts, the East Carter girls team won 7 - 2 and the boys team tied 3-3.

Comets score historic win over Bath Co.
The West Carter Comet baseball team completed its recent trip to Myrtle Beach winning one varsity game and dropping two versus Breckinridge County. The local junior varsity squad won both its games.

Barker to continue hoops as a Knight
Chris Barker was a big part of the success of the West Carter boys’ basketball season this year. And now, he will have the opportunity to make an impact at another area hoops hotbed; the Comet senior has inked his intentions to continue his basketball career at the college level playing at nearby Kentucky Christian University.

5/10K race event to raise funds for fighting drugs
Olive Hill residents are taking back their community. They are fighting against drug abuse by hosting a 5K or a10K walk or run race on April 12 at 7 a.m. Organizers of the event want you to participate.

Kentucky Christian University has won their 11th national championship in NCCAA Division II. The Lady Knights beat Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College, 76-68, in overtime Saturday at home.

Ashland Paul Blazer and East Carter came out on top in first-day action of the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament last Tuesday night at Morehead State University's Ellis T. Johnson Arena. The Tomcats slipped past Bath County, 51-46 and East Carter ran over Raceland, 68-42.

Knights fall in Region, big dance this week
The Knights lost a heartbreaker to Cincinnati Christian in the championship of the Mid-East Region 67-66 on Saturday, but it wasn't the last game for the 2008 seniors. The Knights managed to receive an at-large bid from the NCCAA to the National Tournament in Springfield, Mo. KCU, 26-9 on the season, was rewarded for the success it has had this season.

Tackett coaches Rowan to girls' championship
Rowan County rallied from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit to capture its second 16th Region girls' basketball tournament title in the past four seasons with a 54-52 victory over Ashland Paul Blazer on Monday night at Morehead State University's Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

East Carter led from wire-to-wire to earn its first berth to the 16th Region boys' basketball Tournament finals since 1991 with a 46-36 victory over Ashland Paul Blazer on Tuesday night at Morehead State University's Ellis T. Johnson Arena, while Elliott County used its patented mid-game surge to take a lead and then held off a late Rose Hill Christian rally to capture a 67-60 win.

Rowan, Ashland advance to girls' final
Rowan County held off Morgan County, 68-51, and Ashland Paul Blazer cruised past Raceland, 63-35, in the 16th Region Tournament semifinals on Sunday afternoon at Morehead State University's Ellis T. Johnson Arena. The two winners will meet for the 16th Region title and a berth to the state tournament on Monday at 7 p.m.

Elliott, Rose Hill advance to boys' semis
Thursday night's 16th Region boys' basketball tournament action featured a triple-double and a near triple-double as Rose Hill Christian defeated Rowan County, 62-37, ending the Vikings' season, and Elliott County shrugged off a slow start to down Greenup County in the opener, 79-53, at Morehead State University's Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

After three days of play in the 16th Region basketball Tournament, Ashland, Raceland, Morgan and Rowan are still alive on the girls' side; while East and Ashland advanced to the semifinals in the boys' draw. Action continues tonight with Elliott facing Greenup and Rose Hill squaring off with Rowan at MSU's Ellis T. Johnson Arena. Check back for daily updates.

After a disappointing 48-38 loss in the opening round of this week’s 16th Region Tournament, the Lady Comets have to be thinking ‘what if?’ If West Carter had been at all effective from three-point range (0-11), they average nearly 30-percent… normally at home on the free throw line, the Lady Comets made just 4-12

East battles to the buzzer, falls in final
East Carter cranked up the intensity and took an 11-point lead into the lockers at halftime of last Friday’s 62nd District Tournament championship game against host Elliott County. But the state-ranked Lions rallied after the break to take the title, 78-67, winning the trophy for the third straight season.

Both Warrior squads repeat as OVC champs
This past Saturday saw the Warriors of West Carter 7th and 8th grade boy’s basketball teams capture the OVC Small School Tournament Championship. Both teams are back-to-back champions as they captured the same championship last year.

Back-to-back
On February 16, 2008 the West Carter Middle School 7th and 8th grade Warriors became back to back champions of the OVC Tournament. The tournament was held at Wurtland Middle School. Other teams in the OVC besides West Carter are Wurtland, Fairview, Raceland, Bath, Lewis, Elliott, McKell, Fallsburg.

West moves in the right direction
Well, you know… the gym at Elliott County is decked out in an awful lot of maroon paint! The West Carter varsity girls, sporting their maroon and white uniforms, made themselves at home on the court in Sandy Hook in battling past rival East Carter, 46-42, in the opening round of the 62nd District Tournament.

Two for the ages (better make that four...)
For anyone living under a rock in eastern Kentucky for any of the past 100 or so years, there is a mighty intense high school athletic rivalry right here in Carter County. Other communities talk about these kinds of ballgame-battles where they live, but just about every time the clubs from East Carter and West Carter square off in a contest, each town gets behind their team and records, stats and individual efforts are out the window.

East Carter went up on West Carter by double digits, watched the Comets took a one-point lead late, then regrouped to claim the hard-fought 55-45 win in opening-night action in the 62nd District Tournament at Elliott County High School.

Late free throws lock up Lady Comet victory
A big third quarter helped the Lady Comets overcome hosting Boyd County, 59-52, last Friday night. West Carter outscored the Lions by 11 in the decisive period then connected on 10-13 from the free throw line down the stretch to ice the region win.

That's how you play the game...
It was a matchup between two of the top girls’ powers in the 16th region when Rowan County hosted East Carter earlier this week. When successful teams battle in an athletic contest, especially basketball, a certain level of intensity is expected. Contact is anticipated and Aggressive play is the order of the day. All that comes with participating in contests with good teams.

Raiders net 20th victory
East Carter became the second team in the 16th Region to hit the 20-win mark this season with an impressive 55-42 effort at Fairview, last Friday. Top-ranked and defending champion Elliott County has already passed the victory milestone.

Top-ranked Rowan halts Lady Raider win streak, 67-47
Brittany Dearfield canned a three-pointer at 3:11 in the opening quarter and pulled East Carter to within a point at Rowan County, Monday night.

Comets win the battle of boards, 42-17
West Carter clobbered visiting Fleming County on the boards and scored the 46-34 victory on Hop Brown Court, last Tuesday. The Comets cleaned the glass for an incredible 42-17 rebounding margin in netting the win.

Raiders have won 12 of 13, ranked third in the area
East Carter is peaking at the right time. With a Friday 52-40 road victory over Rowan County, the Raiders raised their win streak to seven games and 12 in the last 13 outings. The lone blemish on that record was a 75-74 Elliott County home win on January 15.

The Junior Varsity Lady Comets scored a 28-15 over Russell to give the girls’ clubs from Olive Hill a split on the road trip last Friday.

Kentucky Christian averaged over 112 points in three home victories last week pushing the team to the 20-win mark (20-10) for the season.

Comets knock off Cougars, earn No. 3 seed
West Carter sank a dozen free throws in the final minutes of play and the Comets came up with a big 56-52 win over visiting Morgan County last Friday on John ‘Hop’ Brown Court to lock up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming 62nd District Tournament.

Knights battle, fall at MSU
Donnie Tyndall’s club likes playing in the Ellis T. Johnson Arena. With Saturday’s 88-66 win over Kentucky Christian, a Division II member of the National Christian College Athletic Association, Morehead State improved to 9-0 at home and tied the school’s best home record to start a season since 1972-73.

Recharged, the Lady Comets beat Lewis & Elliott
Trying to press hosting Elliott County the opening quarter, West Carter gave up a quick27 points. A change of strategy allowed the Lady Comets to utilize their half-court defense and came away from Sandy Hook with a convincing, 69-54 district win, Monday night.

Continuing to make noise at the top of the boys’ basketball regional rankings, East Carter knocked off perennial powers Ashland and Boyd County and improved to 17-4 on the season.

10 Lady Raiders put in points in win over Rose Hill
The East Carter offense exploded for a 22-2 lead at Rose Hill and after the dust settled, 10 Lady Raiders had put points on the board and 14 players pulled down at least one rebound as Hager Easterling’s club rattled the two-time defending region champs in the 63-24 win.
