Heritage Elementary School

Congratulations to Mrs. Spark's class. They claimed the traveling attendance trophy with 100% attendance and zero tardies for the week of September 29th. Also, congratulations to Mrs. Harris' class for coming in a very, very close second with 100% attendance and only 2 tardies for the week. Remember: Good Patriots "SHOW UP" !
¥ Congratulations to Riley Hall and Summer Phillips for being the October "Artist of the Month".
¥ Monday, October 6th will be our monthly Attendance Assembly. We will draw for perfect attendance awards.
Also, on Monday will be our good behavior reward movie and treat for September. We will be watching the movie Spirit.
Students with perfect attendance for September will be watching the movie Brother Bear plus they will receive free nachos on Tuesday the 7th.

¥ Yellow Jackets of the month for October are:
Ashley Grizzell from Ms. Kouns 2nd grade class was elected by her classmates because she is an outstanding student, she is very well behaved and always a friend to everyone.
Kane Wilburn from Ms. Marshall's 1st grade class. Kane is a good student with beautiful handwriting. He is courteous and kind to others and likes to help around the classroom.
Bruce Zheng from Ms. Leach's 1st grade classroom. His classmates say he deserves this honor because he listens to his teacher, he colors neatly and he is a good reader.
Skylar La Grand was chosen from Mr. Hamm's 5th grade class. Skylar is a wonderful student and her work is always above and beyond what is expected. She is kind and helpful to her classmates, she studies hard and always has her work complete. Skylar is a great role model.
Mrs. Dearfield's kindergarten class elected Harley Paynter as their Yellow Jacket of the month. The students say Harley is a good student, a good friend to everyone and she always listens to the teacher.l
Josie Rogers was chosen from Mrs. Ginter's 3rd grade class. She possesses qualities that every student should want to achieve. She is always willing to help her fellow classmates, she is kind and helpful, dependable, organized and a great team player.

Classroom News
1.Mrs. ClaryÕs kindergarten has been Òeating upÓ learning. They constructed pictographs of their favorite kind of apple and their favorite ice-cream flavor after some yummy taste tests. The large graphs are displayed in the hallway.
2.First grade classes are working on fall poetry and looking forward to Halloween.
3. Mrs. BrownÕs second graders are learning about natural resources and how to protect them by recycling, reusing, and reducing. They are still saving cans monthly and striving for their goal of 1000 lbs by the end of the year. So far, weÕve saved 300 lbs. Way to Go!
4.Mrs. ThompsonÕs classroom got a visit from Buddy Grayson as part of a ÒCamp Read-a-LotÓ activity. Thanks to him for his time and expertise.
5.Fourth graders recently were tested for Upper TygartÕs Academic Team. Also, they attended Camp Webb for Environmental Field Day. Miss ThomasÕs students started a unit on animals with Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. WilliamsÕs class began learning about plants with Miss ThomasÕs class. In math, students have been using base ten blocks to learn about addition and subtraction.
6.Mrs. TomolonisÕs class is working on a multiplication unit and reading informational texts.
7.Mrs. TackettÕs students are writing feature articles, learning about European exploration of the New World, and reading The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg.
8. Mrs. UnderwoodÕs class is learning about metaphors and onomatopoeia in writing. Check out our monster poems! Fall Break will be spent on Conservation posters!
¥ Upper Tygart Students of the Week are: Ben Wilburn, Austin Williams, Caleb Roe, and Lora Mabry. These students are winners for their example this week.
Congratulations to Spencer Price for his purple ribbon prize, leaf collection on Trees and Me Day.
¥ Tiger League Basketball will be accepting late registration through October 15th. This league is for kindergarten through 3rd grade students only.
Cost is $40 per child and $25 for each additional child- Opportunities to play basketball or be a cheerleader. Cost includes a Tiger League T-shirt. Any questions contact Upper Tygart Elementary @ 286-2110 or Tim Johnson @ 286-1655.

Star Elementary
Our "Star of the Week" for this week is Gabriel Branham. Gabriel is in Mrs. Kennedy's Kindergarten Class. Mrs. Kennedy says that he is an excellent student and role model. He is so polite and always raises his hand when he needs to ask or say something. He does his best work without being reminded to. He is just a great student. You deserve it Gabriel! Keep up the good work!
We would like to thank the PTO, Parents, Staff, and all of the Volunteers who worked so very hard to put on our fall festival. It was a huge success. Our student's are going to benefit greatly. Thanks also to all of the people and businesses who donated item to our school.
Reminder to our students that we only have school on Monday, and Tuesday this week. The teachers have a work day on Wednesday the 8th and our fall break is Oct. 9th and 10th. Also, our first nine-weeks ends this Tuesday Oct. 7th. Grade cards will be sent home on Friday Oct. 17.
Our schools homeroom attendance winner for this week goes to Mrs. Brown's 3rd grade class with a percentage of 98.05%. Way to go guys enjoy that trophy this week. With the short week our next homeroom attendance winner will be on Friday Oct. 17. So enjoy your trophy the extra two days you earned it!
Our 4th and 5th grades will be attending a play by the Lexington Children's Theater entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. This will be on Tuesday Oct. 14 at 10:00am at the Old Olive Hill Gym.

Upper Tygart Elementary
¥ The Gifted and Talented Program will be planning a school-wide mock election in October to learn about the democratic process and generate awareness of the upcoming Presidential election.
¥ Parents should look for information coming home on the conservation poster contest. The theme is Working Trees: KentuckyÕs Renewable Future.
¥ Mrs. UnderwoodÕs second graders are studying rocks and soil in Science. Also, in Math, the focus is on the following skills: geometric attributes, fact families, and counting dimes and pennies. The guided reading lesson will be on Ronald Morgan Goes to Bat. The spelling words are contractions.
¥ Students of the Week at UTES: 1.Ethan Adkins 2.Noah McKenzie 3.Katelyn Perry These students are shining in their classrooms with excellent effort and performance.
¥ Mrs. TackettÕs Fifth Grade classes are studying Native American cultural regions. In reading, they are exploring literary, informational, and persuasive reading materials with connections in writing.
¥ Mrs. TomolonisÕs Fifth Grade Classes are using expressions, equations, and functions in Math. In reading, they are completing literature units on Stone Fox and Island of the Blue Dolphins.
¥ First Grade will sponsor a dance on October 3rd in the school gym. Admission is $1 with fun activities planned.
¥ Picture Day is October 15th
¥ The 4th and 5th grade classes will be attending a theatre production of ÒThe Legend of Sleepy HollowÓ on October 14th at 1p.m. at the Old Historic Olive Hill High School.

East-end Elementary Basketball

Heritage Elementary
¥ Heritage Elementary 5th grade student, Summer Phillips wants to know if you have anything to do on October 3rd? You don't? Then come to Heritage Elementary's Fall Festival! The Fall Festival will run 5:30 - 8:30 and there will be lots of food, games, inflatables, a haunted house, bingo, cake walk, a silent auction (which will include UK tickets), Guitar Hero, and lots more fun! Summer wants you to come out and join the fun !
Early ticket sale will be from 7:30am to 8:00am and again from 3:00pm to 3:30pm in the front hall of the school each morning starting on Monday, September 29. The tickets will be 5 for a $1.00 at the pre festival sale. The tickets will be 4 for $1.00 the night of fall festival. Buy early for a better value and you can avoid standing in line. The night of the festival we will have a $5.00 hand stamp that will get you on the bounce houses all night.
¥ Artist of the month entries for October are due to Bridges by Tuesday, Septemer 30th.
¥ Bridges Family Resource Center Advisory Council will meet October 1st at 3:15 in the conference room at Heritage.

Star Elementary
¥ Our "Star of the Week" for this week is Cameron Pennington. Cameron is in Mrs. Hay's fifth grade class. Mrs. Hay says that Cameron is friendly and well liked by his classmates. He always has a positive attitude and always does his best. Way to go Cameron! Keep up the good work!
¥ Our homeroom with the best attendance percentage for this week goes to Mr. Sexton's 4th grade class. They ended Mrs. Harper's classÕs three-week hold on the trophy. Great job guys!
¥ We will be starting our Reading Grant testing this week called T-Pro it is used to measure students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade reading ability.

¥ Our PTO would like to announce that they have their class baskets ready and on display at the school, along with a hand made swing, and a four piece coffee table set. They are for their silent auction as part of this Friday's Fall Festival. We invite everyone to come in during school hours this week and bid on these items. The baskets are really great this year the students have worked really hard on bringing in many different items for their baskets. Our Fall Festival is on Friday, Oct. 3rd from 4-8 p.m. This year's fall festival is bigger and better than ever, we are having some outside games like inflatables for the kids. We are also having hayrides, and a corn hole tournament. On the inside will be our concessions, silent auction, and regular games and prizes. The ECMS PTSA will be sponsoring a Fall Fest on Oct. 6 on the soccer field after school until 7:30 p.m. This is open to all ages. Armbands will be $5 and will cover everything except the concession stand. Students wanting to purchase their armbands early, may do so on Oct 2 - 3 during lunch. Parents are still needed to volunteer. There will be music, inflatables and much more. Come out and enjoy an evening of fun.
The PTSA has teamed up with Elder-Beerman to sell community day event coupons booklets for $5. Proceeds will go toward field trips. We must sell 1,000 booklets to accomplish our goal. The student who sells the most will be given a $100 gift card to the store of their choice.

So get out your passports and mark them for Dec 6, 6-9 p.m. for an adventure you will never forget. Olive Hill Elementary School
¥ Mr. Mike Johnson, our County Court Clerk, has rescheduled for October 3. Mr. Johnson will bring along with him an actual voting machine for the students to vote for their choice of president, favorite desert (cake vs. pie), favorite lunch (hot-dog vs. hamburger), and favorite subject (reading vs. math).
¥ Several classrooms have done special activities for Constitution Day. Mrs. JohnsonÕs second grade class is trying Peter Rabbit for breaking into Mr. McGregor's garden The class says that it was not fair to Farmer McGregor to have his vegetables taken by someone or something. This is a creative way to teach students about the three branches of government. Mrs. JohnsonÕs class is turning this into a play; how this turns out, will be determined only in these student's minds. Mrs. LeslieÕs class has been studying about being good citizens, the role of the government, rules and laws, and the constitution. They have been earning "gumballs for good citizens. When the machine reaches a certain level, the class earns a reward. Mrs. McDavidÕs fourth grade class has learned the preamble using hand signals to celebrate Constitution Day.
¥ Yearbooks! Yearbooks! Yearbooks! We still have 2007-2008 yearbooks for sale. If you forgot to purchase one last year, itÕs not too late. You may pick up your yearbook from Mrs. Rhonda Lewis. Hardbacks are $24.00; Soft Covers are $18.00. Cash Only.
¥ Preschool classes have learned about fire safety. The Olive Hill Fire Dept. brought a fire truck to school and let the students sit in it. They also talked to them about the fire truck and how they fight fires. Special thanks to the Olive Hill Fire Department.
¥ As you know attendance is very important to any childÕs education. Olive Hill Elementary will be starting a friendly competition among classrooms. Starting very soon your childÕs classroom could get the honor of having the Òattendance trophyÓ in their room. The classroom with the highest attendance for each grade level will get the Òattendance trophyÓ to display. The Òattendance trophyÓ will then ÒfloatÓ from room to room each week. Good luck to everyone and remember coming to school is the key to win the trophy.

Star Elementary
¥ We begin with our "Star of the Week" this week it is Laura Waugh from Mrs. Harper's fourth grade class. Mrs. Harper says that Laura is independent young lady. She works well on her own and with others. Her classmates say they can depend on Laura to always stand up for them in any situation. Laura is an all around great fourth grader. Keep up the good work!
¥ Our weekly attendance trophy went to Mrs. Harper's class for the third straight week. The rest of you guys are going to have to get on the ball and get that TROPHY! Way to go guys keep up the good work. Our school is averaging 96.2% so far this school year. That is almost 3% above last years average.
¥ We would like to thank our school board for having their monthly meeting at our school this past Monday. Also a big thanks to our PTO officers for have food for the board meeting. It really was appreciated!
¥ Reminder our fall festival is October 3 from 4:00-8:00pm. It promises to be bigger and better than ever this year, so come out and help to support our PTO and school.

Upper Tygart Elementary
¥ Mrs. ThompsonÕs class is studying the Solar System. Each student chose a planet to adopt and created a planet. Also, as Òtravel agentsÓ, each student created a brochure to persuade tourists to visit the planet.
¥ Mrs. BrownÕs class completed landform projects in which students created 3D models of a landform of choice. Mrs. Brown congratulates everyone on a job well done!
¥ Upper Tygart ÒStudents of the WeekÓ, chosen by their teachers, who have shown excellent effort and set outstanding academic example are: Abigail Grace Tackett, Destiny Wilson, and Lyla Evans.

The Architectural Firm of
Clotfelter and Samokar, located in Lexington, have begun plans on a new elementary school for the western end of Carter County.
¥ Mrs. UnderwoodÕs class has just completed a challenge project. After studying the Earth, students created landforms or a brochure on a state of choice, which includes information on landforms there.
Next, they will be studying changes in the Earth. Writing is a matter of importance with focus on narratives, poems, memoirs, and transactive pieces.

Our 2nd grade class continues their recycling project of saving cans. The next collection day will be October 14, 2008 at UTES. Bring your cans to school and place bags in the CAN TRUCK. Second graders are environmentally educated at UTES!

¥ Library news: Library: Thanks again to everyone who made our 1st Bookfair a success. We received $2025.97 in Books from the fair, $1000 in cash to put towards our first reward trip to the movies, and 556 in Vouchers to be used in catalogue.
¥ PTA Penny War starts on Monday Sept 15th. The class that wins will receive "The Great Sundae Bar".
¥ Attendance News: Congratulations to Mrs. Hall's 4th grade class. They have reclaimed the traveling attendance trophy with 98.68% attendance for the week of September 8th. ¥ In honor of Grandparents Day Ms. Sam's cooking lesson for the week is "Granny's Granola".
Ingredients: cheerios (or any kind that the child likes), raisins, sunflower seeds, pretzels, marshmallows, goldfish crackers
Supplies: small paper bag
Directions: Place ten of each ingredient in their own pile. Place the piles in the bag. Fold over the top of the bag. Shake up and enjoy!
¥ Grandparents Day was a great success with 443 visitors in attendance over the three days. Bridges Family Resource Center would like to thank everyone who made this day a success especially the cafeteria staff and volunteers.
¥ Madison Gollihue has been selected as this weeks "Star of the Week" at Heritage Elementary School. Madison is a Kindergarten student in Ms. Barb Ratcliff's class. Ms. Ratcliff says that Madison is a joy to have in class and is always on time. She enters the classroom with a big smile every morning. Madison always completes all her assignments and is willing to help others. She is a very responsible student and shows respect toward her classmates and her school. The faculty and staff are very proud of Madison Gollihue and want to congratulate her on a great job.

Prichard Elementary
¥ Yellow Jackets of the month for September are:
¥ Abbey Whaley from Mrs. Burnett's 4th grade class. The students said Abbey was an excellent choice because she is always polite, follows all rules and procedures, and always gives her best effort to the task at hand. Her pleasant personality always brings a smile to the faces of those around her!
¥ Sarah Holbrook is from Mrs. Everman's fifth grade class. Sarah is a hard working student who quietly goes about the business of being a good citizen, a good friend and a great student. If that wasn't enough, academic competition is probably her favorite sport and reading is her favorite pastime. She is such an avid reader that she will probably own a bookstore or two one day!!
¥ Kayla Boggs was chosen from Mrs. Gillispie's fifth grade class. She always completes all of her assignments in a timely manner. She respectfully participates in all classroom discussions, lectures and group activities. She is also a kind and considerate friend to others in the classroom. She is a model Yellow Jacket!
¥ Caden McDavid was elected by his classmates in Ms. Conleys second grade class. Caden is an excellent role model for the other students because he is always well behaved, he always does his best work and turns it in on time and he is a friend to all!
¥ Ethan Miller was chosen from Mrs. Burton's kindergarten class. Ethan is a good listener and a good leader as well as a great worker. He is also very helpful in the classroom. Ethan also has a good attitude toward learning and trying new things.
¥ Briana Marcum was chosen from Mrs. Burke's 1st grade class. Briana listens and follows directions, she works hard and completes class assignments and she always follows school and classroom rules!
¥ Fall Festival will be held on Friday, October 3rd from 5pm-8pm. Admission is $1.00 per person for everyone 4 years and older.
¥ Peeler Cards will begin being sold on September 24th.
¥ Penny wars will be held Sept 29th-Oct.1st.

Star Elementary
¥ We start with our "Star of the Week". This weeks is Austin Finch he is in Mr. Sexton's 4th grade class. Mr. Sexton say Austin is a fantastic student. His eagerness to learn is contagious. He is a superb math student and loves sports. Congratulations Austin! Keep up the good work!
¥ Our annual Grandparent's Day was once again a huge success. We had a total of 150 grandparents come an eat with their grandchildren over the two days.
¥ Our school went on a very good but somber field trip on Thursday to Princess Chapel Church to honor the victims of the September 11th tragedy. We also got to see them raise their new giant flag, this was a very educational experience because the student's learned about the history of our flag.
¥ We would like to once again this week congratulate Mrs. Harper's 4th grade class for winning the schools attendance award for the second week in a row. This week the class had a perfect 100% attendance with no tardies. Great Job guys! Our school had a good week attendance wise with a percentage of 95.91. Keep up the good work!
¥ Upcoming school event to mark on your calendar is our annual Fall Festival. It will be held this on Friday, Oct. 3 from 4:00-8:00pm at the school. Come out and help to support our PTO and school.

Olive Hill Elementary School
¥ Olive Hill Elementary has a bi-weekly newsletter. Students attending OHES do interviews, write articles, and produce the newsletter themselves. We are very proud of the work that they have done so far this year. If you see Madison Beam, Halley Burge, Brody Carpenter, William Hedge, Katie Holbrook, Mercedes Jordan, Thomas Kegley, Jordan Lands, Chaz Steagall, or Nathan Weddington around, let them know they are doing a fantastic job.
¥ FAMILY READING NIGHT!! This year, Mrs. Fiensy, our Reading Interventionist, will be in charge of Family Reading Night. Starting Tuesday, September 16, the library will be open on TUESDAYS from 3:45 p.m. till 5:00. You may come and go anytime during that time frame, but remember that your child must be accompanied by a parent or another family member.
¥ For those of you unfamiliar with the AR program, students read books and take quizzes over the books. They earn points depending on the number of correct answers. Your child will spend their points at the AR store (held throughout the year) and earn additional prizes including rewards such as an end-of-the-year trip or a 100-point T-shirt.
