Carter County Schools will sponsor Summer Meal Program

• Carter County Schools will sponsor a Summer Food Service Program at East Carter Middle School and West Carter Middle School beginning Monday, June 16 and ending July 25. The Summer Food Program will be closed on July 4. The Summer Food Service Program is a program to ensure that children receive a nutritious lunch, breakfast, and/or supper during their summer vacation. Meals are served at no charge to any child 18 years of age and younger. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Star Elementary

• We begin with congratulations to our Academic Award winners last week. Our Reading Counts winner for the year was second grader Peyton Brown with over 200 points. Great Job!

• Our 2007-08 members of the Carter County Society of Distinguished Scholars are: Braden Brown, Taylor Wilburn, Katelyn Burchett, Becky Jenkins, Eddie Lau, Jonna Gallion, Lesleigh Sexton, Kagan Holley, and Drew Midkiff. Way to go guys this is something to be very proud of!

• Also we had one student to receive this years Principal/ Super Student Award for having straight A's and perfect attendance for the school year. This years recipient was 4th grader Becky Jenkins. Great Job Becky we are very proud of you!

• We would like to thank Mr. Baker and Bridges Family Resource Center for putting on our annual Field Day on Friday. The kids had a great day thanks again for all our your hard work.

• Our Jump Start program for students entering Kindergarten thru Fifth grade will be held July 21-25 from 8:30-11:30am each day. Students will need to provide their own transportation, breakfast and lunch will be provided. Call the school if you have any questions.

• Reminder Tuesday is the last day of school. School will be dismissing at its regular time. Thanks to everyone who helped to make this a great year at Star Elementary. We wish everyone a great summer break.



East Carter Middle School

• Monday, June 2-East middle will honor their retirees with a dinner at 4:00 in the school cafeteria. Good Luck and God Bless to Judy Whitehead, Diana Holbrook, Sunny Whitt and Sherman Berry.

• East Carter Middle School Site Based Council meeting has been changed to Tuesday, June 3, 3:45 p.m. in the library.



Star Elementary

• We begin with our "Stars of the Week". First is Dennis Rife in Mr. Sexton's 4th grade class. Mr. Sexton says that Dennis is becoming a Star Student. He is listening, observing, and following rules better than ever before. His attendance is good and he has been working on improving his achievement. Congratulations Dennis!

• Next is Jonna Gallion in Mrs. Hay's 5th grade class. Mrs. Hay says that Jonna always has her work on time and is a role model to other students because of her positive attitude toward her studies. She is friendly and well-liked by everyone who knows her. Congratulations, Jonna. Way to go Girl!

• Reminders our Pet Day is Tuesday morning. Our Awards Day has been moved to Wednesday at 9:30. Also, our Field Day has been rescheduled to Friday at the school. Finally remember our last day of school is next Tuesday and will be dismissing at regular time.



East Carter Middle School

• Thursday, May 29--ECMS Awards Day: 8th Grade-8:30 a.m.; 7th Grade-10:30 a.m.; 6th Grade-11:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome.

• Friday, May 30-End of Year Dance 6:00-9:00 p.m. $3.00 admission-Concessions will be sold

incoming 5th graders are welcome to attend

• Saturday, May 31-PTSA Spring Fling-Inflatables/Concessions Armbands $5.00

Re-scheduled in case of rain--Volunteers are needed.

• You are invited to ECMS for our last dance on May 30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The theme will be Luau Style. Admission will be three dollars. Concessions will be sold. Casual attire is accepted. You can also dress in tropical style. Parents are welcome.



Star Elementary

• We begin with our "Stars of the Week". We start with Leslie McKenzie. Leslie is in Mrs. Cline's first grade class. Mrs. Cline says that Leslie is a very smart girl! She is so kind to her classmates, and polite to all. Leslie is a good role model for her fellow students. She is definitely a STAR Student! Congratulations Leslie!

Next is Levis Felty. Levis is in Mrs. Hicks' second grade class. Mrs. Hicks says that Levi is a very hard worker and is always willing to lend a hand to a friend in need. Levi is very respectful to his teacher and other adults. He has a positive attitude and is a pleasure to be around. Everyone wants to be his friend! Way to go Levi, you deserve to be recognized as a "Star"!

Our next "Star of the Week" is Kailyn combs. Kailyn is in Mrs. Harpers third grade class. Mrs. Harper says that Kailyn is an outgoing student. If she is around you know you are going to have fun. Her excitement is contagious. Kailyn is not only a friend she is a great student. When she completes her work, you may find her helping a classmate. That is why her classmates say, "Kailyn Rocks!"

Next is Randa Parker. Randa is in Mrs. Browns third grade class. Mrs. Brown says that Randa is a star because she is an exceptional student. She has had perfect attendance, was a member of the academic team, leads our class in Reading Counts points, and is always eager to learn new things. Randa is kind and courteous and is a great friend to everyone in our class. We are very proud to have her as our Star!

Our 4th and 5th grades had a great time at the Lexington Legends game this past Wednesday. While we had to sit through a rain delay, a fun time was still had by all.

• Also our Primary had a great day and great time on their field trip to the Clay Center in Charleston, WV on Friday. They learned a lot of cool things about science, and our planet.

• Some upcoming events for the last 10 days of the school year are: Tuesday May 20 there is No School in Carter County for Election Day. On Wednesday the 21st the 5th grade will be having their annual 5th grade day staring at 1:30. On Thursday the 22nd we will be having our Field Day provided by the Bridges Family Resource Center. This is always something the kids love and look forward to. There is also no school on Monday May 26 in observance of Memorial Day. On Tuesday May 27 we will be having our Pet Day beginning at 9:30.

• We have moved our Awards Day from Friday the 30th to Wednesday the 28th. The Awards will still start at 9:30 in the morning. Our Pre-School Graduation is at 10:00 am on Thursday the 29th. Last day for students is on Tuesday June 3rd. A reminder school will dismiss at its regular time instead of 1 hr early.



East Carter High School

• Beginners Tennis Clinic - A beginners’ tennis clinic for children ages 5 - 17 will be held Monday,

June 9 - Thursday, June 12 at the East Carter Middle School Tennis courts from 6:00 to 7:00. Times could be added with a large number of participants. Bring a racquet or we can let you borrow one. $20 for all 4 days per participant or $6 per day. Refreshments will be provided each day. Prizes will be given to all 3 or 4 day participants. Hosted by ECHS Tennis Team and Boosters.

• Grayson Summer Classic Tennis Tournament: Organized by the East Carter Tennis Boosters Club will be at Grayson - East Carter Middle School (4 new courts) Beginning Friday, June 13. Entry Deadline is Wednesday, June 11 at 6 pm. Proceeds will go to The East Carter Tennis Boosters Club.



Carter Elementary

• The 1st Grade will be taking a class trip to Morehead on May 15th to see a play called Lillly's Purple Plastic Purse and to the fish hatchery. They will dine at McDonalds and they will be returning school by 3:00.

• The Gifted and Academic trip will be on the 19th.

• The parents members for Site-Base are David Jessie and Jama Burton.



Prichard Elementary

• Stars of the week this week are Courtlynn Dewees and Laiken Elam.

• Mrs. Young's class had a class election to nominate their star. After totaling all the votes the winner was Courtlynn Dewees. Reasons noted on the ballots from all the classmates included the following: she is nice to others, she always volunteers to help out in the classroom, she almost always has her homework, she follows classroom rules and she uses her time wisely. Mrs. Young says she has many stars that shine in their own way and wants to wish them luck in third grade next year!

• Miss Whitt's class chose Laiken Elam as the star because she is an excellent student that always follows the rules. She always turns in her homework everyday and follows directions the first time they are given. Laiken is also very caring and is a good friend to others. Miss Whitt says she can always count on her to be the BEST that she can be. When not at school Laiken enjoys riding her bike, jumping on the trampoline and playing in the creek with her brother. Miss Whitt's class is proud to have Laiken represent their class as the star of the week!

• All the faculty and staff at Prichard want to send a big thank you to Melissa Green-the Prichard Parent and Faculty Association President- for all the treats and lunch they received during Teacher Apprecciation Week. Also for the Kmart gift cards and flowers from Well's Greenhouse. They were a GREAT suprise for everyone on Friday!

• Prichard Elementary Preschool and kindergarten registration will be on Friday, May 16th from 9:00am-2:00pm. Please bring a certified birth certificate and a KY immunization record and a copy of a physical. An eye exam will be required before January 1, 2009.



East Carter Middle School

• Seussical the Musical--Come see all your favorite Dr. Seuss characters come to life!! Performances May 19,20,21--6:00 p.m. Tickets $9.00 adult $6.00 children--On sale at ECMS Dinner Theatre Menu: Baked Spaghetti, Salad, Breadsticks, Drink, Dessert

• Tuesday, May 20--no school--election day

• Wednesday, May 21-School Based Meeting 3:45 p.m.

• Friday, May 23--8th grade trip to King's Island!!



Heritage Elementary

• Heritage will have snack sales on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week.

• The Academic team will return from New York on Monday.

• Reminder: NO School on Tuesday the 20th.

• The 4th Grades will be going to the Clay Center on Thursday the 22nd.

• The 1st Grades will be going to the lake on Friday the 23rd .

• Friday is also 5th grade day. The 5th grade will be going to the Family Fun Arcade in Grayson. Mrs. McDavid and Mrs. Yoak's class will be going from 10-12 and Ms. Caldwell and Mrs Keyes will be going from 12 -2 on Friday.

• Reminder: NO School on Monday the 26th.

• Mrs. Keyes and Mrs. Yoak's 5th grade classes will be going to the Columbus Zoo on Tuesday the 27th.

• SBDM Council will meet on the 27th @ 4:00pm

• Ms. Binegar's Classs will be going to the movies on Tuesday the 28th.

• Heritage Distinguished Scholar program will be held on May 28 @ 1:00 pm.

• The Pre-School Picnic will be on May 29th 9:15-10:45 for AM Classes and 12:00-1:30 for PM classes. In the event of bad weather they will use June 2nd as a make up day.

• On Friday the 30th of May the 3rd grade will be going on a fiedtrip to Carter Caves. The 2nd grade will be having field day at the school.

• Heritage will have their award's day program on June 2nd at 1:00pm.



Carter Christian Academy

• Carter Christian Academy continues to register students from preschool through 8th grade for the 2008-09 school year. CCA offers individual attention for each student that allows them to reach their fullest potential. CCA begins its’ 12th year of operation for students in Carter County and with over 17 years combined teaching experience, we are prepared to give students the tools they need to succeed.

CCA will host a Come and Go informational Open House on Sunday, May 18 at New Beginnings Assembly of God, from 1-3 p.m. Come by and see us so we can answer any questions you may have. Check us out on the web, too, at www.carterchristianacademy.com.



Olive Hill Elementary School

• The Olive Hill Elementary School will host an Academic Team Golf Scrambler Saturday, May 31. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. $160 per team-fee includes 18-holes golf with cart,f lunch, and pay back 1st and 2nd place. This scramble is being held at the Carter Caves Golf Course. For more information call 286-8881 or 286-4411 ext. 2540. Proceeds go to the academic team.



Star Elementary

• We begin with our "Star of the Week". This week is Haleigh Adkins in Mrs. Kennedy's kindergarten class. Mrs Kennedy says that Haleigh is such a wonderful student who always tries to do her best. Her smile brightens the day of everyone around her. Way to go Haleigh! Keep up the good work!

• Our fifth graders would like to thank Mrs. McDavid at East Middle and her students for the great time we had at there Science Festival last week.

• Up coming events this week.

Our fourth and fifth grades will have a program on Tuesday from 12:30-2:30. Presented by East Carter's FCCLA group entitled MADDgic Day.

On Wednesday our Primary will be having there Beach Day of fun an games. Also on the 14th our fourth and fifth grades will be going to Lexington to see a Lexington Legends baseball game. On Friday our primary will be taking a field trip to the Clay Center in Charleston, West Virginia.



Star Elementary

We begin with this week's "Stars of the Week". First is Ryan Sherman. Ryan is in Mr. Sexton's fourth grade class. Mr. Sexton says that Ryan is a great young man. He has a wonderful imagination and can turn any situation into something creative. He is a wonderful friend and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Congratulations Ryan!

Next is Autumn Halley. Autumn is in Mrs. Hay's fifth grade class. Mrs. hay says Autumn is friendly and well-liked by her classmates. She has a real talent for Fine Arts. With this special talent, she has the ability to go far in this field. Congratulations for being our Star of the Week!

We would like to give a big congratulations to Mrs Hay's fifth grade class. All of the student's in her class now has at least 100 Reading Counts Points. They are celebrating with an Ice Cream Party. Congratulations Guys this is something to be very proud of!

We have a bunch of things going on at Star this week. Our second grade will be taking the CTBS Test on Monday, and Tuesday. Our third grades will be taking their spring GRADE Test on Monday. Our fifth grade will be going to East Middle on May 5 at 9:00am for their DARE Graduation. On Wednesday May 7 our fifth grade will again be going to East Middle for their Science Festival. Also on May 7 out first grade will be hosting a Mothers Day Tea Party at 1:30. Our Pre-school will be hosting their Mothers Day Tea on Thursday May 8 at 10:00. Also on May 8th our third-fifth grades will be going to Prichard Elementary to see the Wolfe Brothers Program. On Friday May 9 our Kindergarten class will be going in the afternoon to McDonald's in Grayson for Ice Cream and some fun time.

Reminder this week May 5-9 is Teacher Appreciation Week. Take this time to let your child's teacher know how much you appreciate their hard work they do each day in the education of our children.



Heritage Elementary School

• This week is the 2nd grade NRT testing window.

• REMINDER: This is Teacher Appreciation Week.....Don't forget to tell your teacher's and support staff how much they are appreciated!!!!

• Heritage will be having snack sales on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week.

• Thanks to everyone that made the 3rd annual CATS Family Fun such a great success!

• Monday the 5th graders will be going to ECMS for DARE Graduation.

• Tuesday the 5th grade will be testing in math for Middle School Placement.

• Wednesday the 5th grade will be going to ECMS for Science Day and Orientation.

• Also on Wednesday, May 7: School Art Show Winners Announced and Winners Showcase will be on the wall in the main hallway. Letters will go home with winning students.

• Library News: Camden Park trip is Thursday May 8th for all students who achieved their 30 A.R. points for 2nd semester. The bus will leave at 8:30. Please return permission slips as soon as possible. We will be attending Discover your Inner Scientist at 10:30 in the Discovery Center.

• Ashley Bayes now has 713.1 A.R. points This is a school record. WOW! Kasey Isaacs now has 403.1. Summer Phillips now has 202.7. Madison Dyer 103.7. Haley Everman100.6. Jaclynn Ruth 104.4. Chase Webb 106.8. Katie Cartwright 100.6.

A big thanks to the Hitchins Post for providing free pizza lunch whenever these folks reach their clubs. Friday Mrs. McDavaid's 5th grade class will be going to the Louisville Science Center.
