Raymond Roar
1924–2009
OLIVE HILL – Raymond Roar 85, of Olive Hill, passed away Thursday, November 5, at the V. A. Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
He was born June 7, 1924, in Carter County, a son of the late Logan and Minnie Francis Barker Roar.
Mr. Roar was retired from the Alliance Clay Products in Alliance, Ohio, where he worked as a laborer. He served his country with the United States Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the Clifty United Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Glen Roar, Joe Roar, Stanley Roar and Earl Roar; one sister, Mearl Hornsby; also three infant sibling, Harold Roar, Martha Roar and Cynthia Roar.
Raymond is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Jearlean Stevens Roar; two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Kathy Roar of Grayson, David and Becky Roar of Ashland, two grandchildren, Davina Roar Herron and husband Tim of Grayson. Brett Roar of Ashland. one great-granddaughter, Aleia Faith Herron; one sister, Mary Lewis of Lewis County . He also leaves several other extended family members and many friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, Nov 9, at the Globe Funeral Chapel with Minsters J. D. Riggs, Eury Barker, David Barker and James Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in the Roar Cemetery at Grahn.
Friends may call after 6:p.m. Sat. anytime Sunday, and until the service time on Mon. at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill.
Donald Barker, Terry Cline, Ricky Stevens, Don Branham, Phillip Roar and Donald Roar will serve as pallbearers.
Berkley Franklin "Buck" Hall
1937 – 2009
OLIVE HILL – Berkley Franklin “Buck” Hall age 72, of State Highway 1662, Olive Hill, Kentucky, passed away Monday, November 02, 2009, at his residence.
Born July 18, 1937, in Carter County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Stewart and Myrtle Kiser Hall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Clement, Finley, Artle, Courtney, Daryl, and Quinten Hall, and three sisters, Gladys Crawford, Versailla Hall, and Corinthia Hall.
Buck is survived by his wife, Joan Back Hall, whom we married on March 23, 1962; one son, Stewart Hall and wife Norma of Lexington, Kentucky; one daughter, Lori Ann Nock and husband Tom of LaPlata, Maryland; one sister, Victoria “Skippy” Scrimshaw and husband Buck of Spokane, Washington; and six grandchildren, Sarah Nock, Kristen Nock, Bradley Nock, Amanda Hall, Heather Hall, and Amber Langley.
Buck was a former General Refractories employee for 18 years and retired from Walker Construction Company after 10 years as foreman. He was a member of the Olive Hill Masonic Lodge No. 629, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the El Hasa Shrine Temple in Ashland, Kentucky. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, working puzzles, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. John Butch Kelsey and Dallas Fraley officiating. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Carter County.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Back, J. R. Back, Brent Back, Joey Back, Gary Back, Randy Fritz, and Dick Counts.
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Geraldine Mae Shay Adkins
1924 – 2009
MOREHEAD – Geraldine Mae Shay Adkins, age 84, of Flemingsburg Road, Morehead, , departed this life on Wed., Oct. 21, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
Born October 23, 1924, in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Allie G. and Beulah Mae Rayborn Shay. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Adkins in 1964; one brother, Edwin Shay; and one infant son, Ronnie.
Mrs. Adkins is survived by one daughter, Linda (Kenny) Hamilton of Morehead, Kentucky; one son, Dennis (Jeanne Beth) Adkins of Grayson, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Tracy (Connie) Hamilton, Rossaline Deheart, and Kimberly Hamilton, all of Morehead, eight great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
She is also survived by one brother, Bobby (Alice Mae) Shay of Garden City, Michigan; two sisters, Dora (Howard) Alliman of Toledo, Ohio, and Mary (Calvin) Wells of Soldier, Kentucky; and one sister-in-law, Ester Shay of Ironton, Ohio. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives to mourn her passing, as well as her faithful poodle, Butterscotch.She was a member of the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Niles, Ohio. In recent years, she attended the Soldier Wesleyan Church.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sat. Oct. 24, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joe Williams and the Rev. Kenny Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in the Engle Hall Cemetery in Soldier.
Pallbearers will be Tracy Hamilton, Richard Traylor, Tom Alliman, Steve Rice, Vernon Bowman, and Chad Dickerson.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday, October 23, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
Barbara Aileen Paynter Coleman
1924 – 2009
OLIVE HILL – Barbara Aileen Paynter Coleman, 85, of Olive Hill, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2009, at the Saint Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky.
She was born June 29, 1924, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Gordon and Jeanetta Lambert Paynter.
Mrs. Coleman was a homemaker, and attended the Nazarene Church in Olive Hill.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-five years, Charles E. Coleman; six brothers, Bob Paynter, Max Paynter, Gerald Paynter, Glenn Paynter, James Paynter and Wiley Paynter; five sisters, Opal Paynter, Edna Fisher, Nell Thompson, Dorothy Birchfield, Marcella Paynter and Phyllis Joy Paynter.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tim and Faye Coleman of Grayson, Kentucky, Mitch Coleman of Olive Hill, Kentucky; one daughter, Charlotte Coleman of Olive Hill, Kentucky; one grandson, Travis Coleman of Olive Hill, Kentucky. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov.7, at the Globe Funeral Chapel, with Brother Marvin Gearhart officiating. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill.

TOLLESBORO –Evelyn Water Hughes, age 80, of Cabin Creek Road, Tollesboro, Kentucky, passed away, Friday evening, Oct. 30, at the Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville, Kentucky.
She was born Aug. 21, 1929 in Lewis County, a daughter of the late Arthur Joseph and Zella May Rogers Water.
Evelyn was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by a daughter, Jackie Hughes of Vanceburg, Kentucky and Pam Winkler of Clinton, Missouri.
There will be no calling hours or funeral service.

VANCEBURG – CharCarol Marie Cooley Edington, age 53, of Vanceburg,passed away Tues. morning, Nov. 3, at her residence.
She was born, March 15, 1956, in Lewis County, a daughter of Melvin and Iva Jean Bloomfield Cooley of Vanceburg,
Carol was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, companion and friend. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Edington; three brothers, Woodrow Cooley, Harry Cooley and Larry Cooley.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her companion and best friend, Lawrence Lee; two sons, Russell Edington and Calvin Edington both of Vanceburg. three daughters, Wilma Carrington, Carolyn Brown and Dreama Edington all of Vanceburg, Kentucky; fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Jim Cooley, Eddie Cooley, Calvin Cooley and Bill Cooley; two sisters, Mary Thurman and Wilma Cooley all of Vanceburg. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends who will sadly mourn her passing.
Funeral service will be held 11: a.m. Friday, Nov 6, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Camp Dix. with Brother Kenny Cooley officiating. OLIVE HILL – Pearl Tackett, age 82, of Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday evening, Nov. 5, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead,
Ms. Tackett was born June 3,1927 in Carter County, a daughter of the late Estill and Emily Carpenter Tackett.
Pearl was a homemaker, and also a member of the First Baptist Church in Olive Hill.
She is survived by one son; Ricky Hanshaw of Olive Hill, one daughter; Sandra Hanshaw Carpenter of Mt. Gilead Ohio; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews along with many other family members and friends who will sadly mourn her passing.
Funeral service will be held 2: p.m. Monday, Nov. 9,, at the Oney - Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill, with Brother Doug Virgin officiating. Burial will follow in the Ross Chapel Cemetery on Bens Run Road in Olive Hill.

OLIVE HILL – Mary Edna Goldie Baker Vickers, age 96, of Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday afternoon, Nov. 8, at the Carter Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Grayson.
Ms. Vickers was born July 19, 1913, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Watt and Beulah Gorman Baker.
Edna was a homemaker and of the Church of God faith.
In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband of forty-five years; David Webster "Webb" Vickers; one brother, Ercel Baker Sr.and his wife Mary; one sister, Phyllis Baker Walker and her husband Jesse; one brother-in-law, Blackie Robertson; one nephew, Lowell L. Baker; one niece, Linda Walker Marsh.
She is survived by one sister, Ruby Baker Robertson of Huntington, West Virginia; three nephews, Ercil Baker and wife Betty of Evansville, Indiana, Larry Walker and wife Wanda of Canton, Michigan, Harold Baker and wife Elizabeth Ann of Olive Hill, thirteen great nieces and nephews, fourteen great-great nieces and nephews, three great-great-great nieces and nephews. She also leaves several other extended family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at the Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill. with Brother Mike Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in

RUSH – Mary Enna Horne, 99, of Rush, KY went to be with her Lord on Saturday, November 7, in Heartland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Point, OH. She was born March 21, 1910 in Iron Hill, KY,
A daughter of the late Frank and Junie Franklin Davis. She was a school teacher at Iron Hill and Fairview, and a member of the Rush Missionary Baptist Church since 1954 where she taught Sunday school for over 30 years.
She loved crocheting, quilts and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Horne in 2002, brothers Howard, Hobert and John Davis and sisters Bertha Goodwin, Ida Davis and Jewell Davis and a niece Kimberly Robinson.
Her survivors include three nephews Gary Goodwin, Roy Francis Hall and Brent Davis; seven nieces Joyce Goodwin Leaver, Janet Smith, Mary Lee Adams, Jeanette Rogers, Susan Davis, Karen Davis and Melissa Sainz; a special great nephew Douglas Leaver and a special friend and neighbor Norma Jean Ingle.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2: p.m. at Malone Funeral Home with Jerry Foster, minister. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memorial Gardens.

GRAYSON –Alma Counts, 82, of Grayson, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, October 1, at Kings Daughters Medical Center. She was born Nov. 11th, 1926 in Carter County, KY a daughter of the late Lawrence and Christene Halterman Griffith. She was a homemaker and was of the Methodist faith. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Bill Counts, four sisters, Amanda Halterman, Edith Meadows, Doshie Wilburn and Roxie Campbell and five brothers, Adner, Chris, Everett, Edford and L.C. Griffith.
Her survivors include: One sister, Emma Wilburn of Grayson; Special nephews, Harold Wilburn Jr., Randell (Tonya) Wilburn, Michael (Brenda) Wilburn and Bill (Linda) Wilburn; Special niece, Betty (Tom) McDowell and several other nieces and nephews.

Ellis Quenton Salyers
1925–2009
OLIVE HILL – Ellis Quenton Salyers, 83, of Olive Hill, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born November 20, 1925, in Carter County, a son of the late Richard and Mary Hern Salyers. Quenton served in the Korean War and was a retired auto parts salesman. He was a member of the Globe Christian Church where he had served as Sunday School secretary/treasurer, a Deacon, and was presently serving as an Elder.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Otto Salyers and Ted Salyers; and two sisters, Irene Salyers and Ruby Salyers Haney.
Quenton is survived by his wife of 54 years, Magene Tackett Salyers; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Merry Salyers, of Olive Hill; granddaughter, Miranda Salyers of Johnson City, Tennessee; grandson, Randan Salyers, of Olive Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Betty Salyers of Oakland; sister-in-law, Jean Salyers of Davie, Florida; sister-in-law, Betty Chlebek of Dayton, Ohio; sister-in-law, Brenda (and Dick) Davis of Tipp City, Ohio; and cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11: a.m. Sat, Nov 7, at the Globe Funeral Chapel, by the Rev. David Rayburn, Rev. Eddie Porter, and Rev. Shaun Whitt. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery.

MOREHEA – BaRev. James Kenneth “Kenny” Hamilton, age 66, of Morehead, passed away Wed, Nov. 4, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Born Sept 11, 1943, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Trace Brooks and Irnea Fraley Hamilton.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Adkins Hamilton, one son, Tracy Hamilton and wife Connie of Morehead, two daughters, Rossaline Deheart and Kimberly Hamilton, both of Morehead,seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Other survivors include two brothers, Milton Hamilton and Vernon Hamilton, both of Morehead, Kentucky; three sisters, Barbara Lawhorn, Mildred Parker, and Helen Tanner, all of Morehead, one brother-in-law, Dennis L. Adkins of Grayson, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Rev. Hamilton was an evangelist and minister for 39 years, serving the Soldier Wesleyan Church for 14 years, and a lumber inspector. He enjoyed attending church and spending time with his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sat. Nov. 7, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joe Williams, Rev. Randy Binion, and Rev. Charles Mills officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

FLORIDA –CharlesEllis Williams, Florida - Charles Ellis Williams, 72, died Oct 5th. He was born In Dehue, W.Va. He resided in Brandon, Fla. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Sherry L. Williams; several children including NorNa Sagraves, Ronald Barker and Charles E. Williams Jr.; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the treasures of his life. A celebration of his life will take place in KY at a later date.

Minnie Lou Jimison McClurg
1927-2009
MOREHEAD – Minnie Lou Jimison McClurg, 82, of Soldier, passed away Monday, October 26, 2009 at her home.
She was born on July 15, 1927 in Fleming County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late John William Jimison and Permelia Ann Hyatt Jimison.
Mrs. McClurg was a homemaker. She was of the Church of God Faith and enjoyed raising flowers and vegetables, cooking, baking and collecting figurines.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Jackson McClurg, one son, Gordon McClurg, two daughters, Starr Henderson and Claire Hope Thompson Binion, two brothers, Dewey Jimison and Jim Jimison, two grandsons, Nick Oney and Tommy Arthurs and one great-granddaughter, Susan Long.
Survivors include two sons, Chet McClurg and Terry McClurg and one daughter, Anita Barker all of Soldier, sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, October 29, 2009 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Delmar Logan, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Caudill Cemetery at Sharkey.
Pallbearers were Steve Henderson, Kenneth Henderson, Terry Henderson, Jr. Griggs, Allen McClurg and Josh Flannery and Jake Layne served as an honorary pallbearer.

Jared Edward Sturtevant, age 10, of Hitchins, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday morning, November 1, 2009, at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born, September 4, 1999, in Lakeland, Florida, a son of Edward and Lora Howard Sturtevant of Hitchins, Kentucky.
Jared was a member of the Mills Branch Apostolic Church. He loved going to church and telling everyone about the Lord.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother and two sisters, Joshua David Sturtevant, Kassandra Ann Sturtevant and Kaitlyn Lee Sturtevant all of Hitchin, Kentucky.

Clayton Alexander Burnett
1918–2009
GRAYSON – Clayton Alexander Burnett died on October 31, at his home at Lindsey Chapel,Grayson, Clayton was born March 18, 1918 at Grayson the son of the late Edwin (Ned) Burnett and Ella Alexander Burnett.
He was baptized when he was 12 years old and was a member of the Lindsey Chapel Methodist Church. He often quoted Hebrews 12:14, Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise James Burnett, a step son Thomas Watt Pope, step son-in-law Harold Carroll and two step grandsons, Christopher Pope and Luke Wellman.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Burnett, two sons, Stephen (Toni) Burnett of Ashland and Roderick Burnett at home. He is also survived by a brother, Edwin (Pat) Burnett of Long Beach, CA and one sister, Alma Jackson of Grayson.
He graduated from Prichard High School in 1936 and Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Mo. He worked at Owens-llinois Glass in Kanawha City, WV as a drafting engineer and assistant plant manager until 1962. He returned to Grayson to pursue the love of his life, farming. He operated Burnett Polled Hereford farm and ran a large chicken house operation for many years. He served on the Carter County Soil Conservation board for 17 years. Part of his farm was subdivided to form the Corral Park Subdivision. He sang with the Wheeler Parsons group at many area churches and maintained a large selection of music which he enjoyed listening to.
He has one stepson Tony (Bee) Pope, two stepdaughters Nancy Carroll and Sue (Harold) Wellman of Grayson.
Additional survivors are four granddaughters, Melissa (Rodney) Salyers of Olive Hill, Carrie (Chris) Boggess of Independence, Ky, Amy Stephens of Argillite, and Allison (Arnold) Burnett/Kilburn of Pleasant Valley.
He is also survived by step grandchildren: Doug (Shirley) Carroll, Greg (Patty) Carroll, Mignon (Randy) Colley, Erica Gallion, Jeffrey ( Shellie) Wellman, Tracy (Byron) Wallace, Tommy (Sylvia) Pope, Brooxie (Rodney) Newton, Shea Pope and Corey (Stephanie) Pope; Stephanie Geise, Ginger Johnson and Amber Amburgey.
Great grandchildren: Cathy, Ryker, Nicholas and Brody Stephens; Kelly and Kyle Burnett/Kilburn; Jessica Burnett, Jennifer Robson, Dakota Potter; Julia Boggess.
Step great grandchildren: Ashlee Bailey; Ian Johnson; Tyler, Ambrelle and Brian Amburgey. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and many, many friends and extended family.
He spent the last years of his life enjoying the swing on the back porch of his home. From there he could oversee the farming operation of his stepson Tony and his friend, Morris Shearer. He entertained many friends and family from his place on the porch and was always ready with a good story. He loved to entertain and each year he and Faye hosted a large family reunion. Clayton was an integral part of an extremely large family who will miss his great wit and wisdom and have plans for a greater reunion someday.
Funeral services will Wednesday ,Nov. 4, 1 p.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home, John Moore and Lewis Davis ,ministers. Burial will follow at the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the funeral home.

Evelyn Water Hughes, age 80, of Cabin Creek Road, Tollesboro, Kentucky, passed away, Friday evening, October 30, 2009, at the Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville, Kentucky.
She was born August 21, 1929 in Lewis County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Arthur Joseph and Zella May Rogers Water.
Evelyn was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by a daughter, Jackie Hughes of Vanceburg, Kentucky and Pam Winkler of Clinton, Missouri.

FROSTPROOF FLORIDA– Stella Spence, 74, of Frostproof, formerly of Grahn, died Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Visitation will be held from 6 -8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Frostproof.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Frostproof. Interment will follow at the Silver Hill Cemetery.

Ralph William Huffman
1942-2009
Ralph William Huffman, 67, of Grayson, KY passed at his residence on October 26, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Iron Hill, KY in 1942. He was the son of the late Ralph and Barbara Akers Huffman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He worked for Norfolk and Southern Railroad, Landstar Trucking and retired as a intracostal, independently owned trucker. He is survived by a son, Scott Alan and wife Cindy Huffman of Walbridge, OH; a daughter, Sheila and husband Tom Mackowski of Grosse Ile, MI. Four loving grandchildren, Dominik, Madalyn, Kaitlyn and Nathan. Two sisters Alice Faye Huffman of Grayson, KY and Beatrice Kay and husband David Miracle of Flatwoods, KY. Several loving aunts and two special nieces.
The family will greet friends at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson on Wednesday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with Russell “Bud”, Bill and Everett Burnett ministers. Burial will be in the Huffman Family Cemetery at Iron Hill.
