Dorothy B. Hall

1928-2008

HITCHINS - Dorothy B. Hall, 80, of Hitchins went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 19, at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

She was born June 3, 1928 in Hitchins, a daughter of the late Sherman and Iva Salyers Bair. She was a member of Wings of Faith Church in Grayson.

She was the wife of the late Ernest Hall who was the love of her life. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her brother, William Bair and a sister, Susie Helle.

Dorothy loved the Lord and was a great inspiration to all her family and friends and she will always be the sweetest loving mother, grandmother and sister of all time.

Her survivors include two sons, Anthony Hall, Ernie and Loretta Hall both of Hitchins; three daughters, Debbie and Estill Lewis, Barb and Bob Johnson both of Denton, Linda and Howard Waugh of Rattlesnake Ridge; grandchildren, Rebecca Hall, Tabitha and Kyle Stewart, Mark Hall, Annette and Mike Martin, Marie Lewis and Chris Porter, Travis and John Lewis, Teresa and Albert Holbrook, Anita and Mark Mosier, Tonya and Jim Cox; great-grandchildren, Keelee Stewart, Drew Porter, Chase and Austin Martin, Crystal and Kristen Holbrook, Jared Mosier, Dylan and Logan Cox; four sisters, Elaine O’Brian, Opal Heim, Iris Bach and Martha Salyer; five brothers, Rufus, Bill, Charles, Andy and Willard “Junior” Bair. Several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, September 21, 1 p.m. at Malone Funeral Home by ministers Keith Hill and Tim Hall. Burial followed in the East Carter County Memorial Gardens.



Charles “Russ” Russell Fraley

1921-2008

KEHOE - Charles “Russ” Russell Fraley, 86, of Kehoe passed away Tuesday, September 9, in Hospice Community Care Center.

He was born September 17, 1921 in Rosedale, a son of the late Robert L. and Laura Craig Fraley.

He was a farmer and served his country in WWII as an Army Corporal with the 1st Calvary.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Whitt in 1999.

His survivors include his wife of 59 years, Rosie Mae Blevins Fraley; one daughter, Reba McGinnis of Flatwoods; two sons, Jeff (Tonya) Fraley of Ashland, and Greg (Mara Zoe) Fraley of Iron Hill; one granddaughter, Morgan Fraley and two step-granddaughters, Samantha Clevenger and Melissa Harlow.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, September 12, 1 p.m. at Malone Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Barrell officiating. Burial followed in the East Carter County Memorial Gardens. East Carter Jr. ROTC performed military rites.



Robert Michael Simpson

1942-2008

GRAYSON – Robert Michael Simpson, 66, of Grayson, died Monday evening at his residence.

He was born August 19, 1942 in Ashland, a son of the late Robert Hughes and Mary Alice Garvin Simpson. He was a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, a Vietnam Veterans serving with the United States Air Force, a member of the American Legion and VFW, A Cub Scout leaders for many years, and a member of the Baptist faith.

Robert worked 32 years for the National Weather Service, as a Meteorologist Technician, where he received numerous awards for outstanding service, also was a Volunteer driver for Grayson Meals on Wheels. He retired in 1999 and moved back to his roots in the mountains.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death four uncles, Paul Simpson, Earl Ray Simpson, James Simpson, Charles Simpson; and two aunts, Thelma Schorman and Pearl Mae Rzechowski.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Walker Simpson; one daughter, Mary Ann Lewis, of Grayson; one granddaughter, Megan Dawn Lewis of Grayson; one great-grandson, Ryland Scott Pfau of Grayson; two brothers, Danny Ray Simpson of Ashland, James David Simpson of Flatwoods; three uncles, Jack Simpson and Donnie Simpson of Ashland, Bill Garvin of Louisville; he is also survived by special friends, Dean Miller of Charleston, SC, Anthony Rhoden of Grayson, Jarrod Kelly of Grayson and Kristopher Felty; he is also survived by a host of cousins and friends.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 19, at Sparks Funeral Home by Minister Gary Wurts. Burial followed at Cribbs Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by the East Carter JROTC.



Burley “Burl” Jordan

1913-2008

OLIVE HILL – Mr. Burley “Burl” Jordan, age 95, of West Highway US 60, Olive Hill, passed away Tuesday evening, September 16, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland.

He was born June 30, 1913, in Carter County, a son of the late John and Julia Stamper Jordan.

Burl was a Christian and a member of the United Baptist Church since 1952. He was a retired employee of Harbison-Walker Brickyard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dessie Webb Jordan; one son, Eugene Jordan; two daughters, Nadine Seagraves and Linda Christine Lovelace; one grandson, Eric Lovelace; four brothers, Clyde Jordan, Covie Jordan, Boston Jordan and Ernest Jordan; three sisters, Garnett Gilliam, Myrtie Green, and Liza Driscoll.

He is survived by two sons, Burl C. Jordan of Middletown, Ohio and George E. Jordan of Franklin, Ohio; six grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Herb Jordan of Toledo, Ohio; one sister, Myrl Lenwell of Riga, Michigan; he also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 20, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Elder Eury Barker officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery in Olive Hill.



Earl Jordan

1929-2008

ALLEGAN, MICHIGAN – Mr. Earl Jordan, age 79, of Allegan, Michigan, formerly of Olive Hill, and Hartford City, Indiana, passed away Saturday, September 13, at the Life Care Center in Plainswell, Michigan.

He was born July 19, 1929, in Three Prong, a son of the late John Lewis Jordan and Lucy Jane Jordan McCoy.

Earl was retired from the Hartford City Street Department. He was a member of the Amvets Post #23, American Legion Post #159 and the Moose and Elks Lodge #625 all in Hartford City, Indiana. He was a Christian and attended the First Baptist Church of Allegan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, George W, McCoy; one brother, Charles Jordan and five infant brothers; four step-brothers, Charles McCoy, Albert McCoy, Orville McCoy, and Arthur McCoy; one half-sister, Edna Marris; four step-sisters, Thelma Adkins, Myrtle Tomacelli, Ailene Boyd, and Bertha Parsons.

He is survived by one half-brother, John McCoy of Holland, Michigan; two half-sisters, Betty Bronson of Allegan, Michigan and Mary Creekmore of Little Rock, Arkansas; one step-sister, Gracie Suters of Portsmouth, Ohio; he also leaves several other extended family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 20, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Bud Burnett, officiating. Burial followed in the Arms Cemetery on Halfway Branch Road in Carter County.



Geneva LaVerne Wicker Bodkins Berry

1932-2008

OLIVE HILL - Geneva LaVerne Wicker Bodkins Berry, age 75, of Olive Hill, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, September 20, in Kings Daughters Medical Center.

She was born December 2, 1932 at Beech Grove in Grayson, a daughter of the late Burnice and Bessie Roark Wicker.

Mrs. Berry was a graduate of Morehead State University with a Master’s Degree in Education and was a retired teacher at Carter City Elementary.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Olive Hill, was a Ky. Colonel and a member of the Eastern Star and the Ohio Fast Draw Gun Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Leroy Max Bodkins; one brother, Owen Dempsey Wicker; four sisters Eileen Phillips, Irita Wicker, Kathleen Kiser and Gayle Wicker.

Her survivors include her husband, Dallard Berry of Olive Hill; one son, Monte Owen (Tonyia) Bodkins of Olive Hill; two daughters, Melody Kim Bodkins Cook of Bowling Green, and Marclain Onette (William R.) Cook of Tuscola, IL; seven grandchildren, Melody Shyann Cook, Gale Abraham Cook III, William Maxwell Cook, Marcus Adam Cook, Payton Marae Bodkins and Hagan Robert Owen Bodkins; three sisters, Billie Ruth Sparks of Olive Hill, Janet Lynn Boyd of Toledo, OH and Toni Jill Shoup of Panama City, FL; one great-grandson, Alexander Cook; two step-sons, Ercel (Karen) Dickens of Cincinnati, OH and Mike (Debbie) Berry of Rush; six step-daughters, Glenna (Russell) Marshall of Rush; Beatrice (Mike) Calhoun of Flatwoods, Jeannie Berry of Ashland, Connie (Rick) Hall of Rush, Gretta (Don) Hensley of Rush and Jetta Berry of Columbus, OH; 16 step-grandchildren and 18 step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 24, at 11 a.m. at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson, with Russell Patterson and Fred Wiles, officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.



Roger L. Rice

1944-2008

GRAYSON - Roger L. Rice, 64, of Grayson, passed away on Sunday, September 21, at his residence.

He was born June 14, 1944 in Rowan County, a son of the late Ruby Sanders and Charles Rice.

He retired from Qualls Oil Company in Olive Hill, after 37 years of service.

His survivors include his wife, Deloris Thompson Rice of Grayson; one son, Roger Allen Rice of Grayson; one daughter, Shelia Rice West and her husband, Daniel Ray West of Mt. Washington; three grandchildren, Corey Allen Rice, Dakota Wade Rice and Olivia Danielle West.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 25, at 1 p.m. at the Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Rev. George T. Smith officiating. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.



Henderson Junior Carpenter

1947-2008

OLIVE HILL - Mr. Henderson Junior Carpenter, age 61, of Frazier Road, Olive Hill, passed away Sunday evening, September 21, at his residence in Olive Hill.

He was born December 8, 1947, in Carter County, a son of the late Henderson and Nancy Mae Wilson Carpenter.

Henderson was a retired self-employed carpenter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Carpenter and Paul Carpenter.

He is survived by his wife, Joyci Cline Carpenter; three sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Jennifer Carpenter, Don and Taunya Carpenter all of Olive Hill, Jack and Robin Carpenter of Georgetown; two step-sons and daughter-in-law, Weylin Messer, Jeremy and Brenda Messer all of Olive Hill; one step-daughter and son-in-law, Branndi and Joe Carpenter of Olive Hill; mother of his sons, Mary Charlene Lunsford Carpenter of Nicholasville; seventeen grandchildren; two brothers, James Louie Carpenter of Lexington, and Clyde Carpenter of Olive Hill; five sisters, Garnette Newsome, Amanda Henderson, Arvetta Carpenter, Gracie Carpenter and Ida Marie ‘Tootie’ Reynolds all of Olive Hill; he also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 24, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Ravin Fields, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Carpenter Family Cemetery on Frazier Road in Olive Hill.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.



Julia T. Meade

1938-2008

MARION, OH – Julia T. Meade, age 70, of 1747 Covington Place, Marion, Ohio passed away Wednesday, September 17, at 7:50 a.m. at her home.

Julia was born May 19, 1938 in Grayson, a daughter of the late George and Elsa Hall Burton.

She was a homemaker. On April 2, 1960 in Jelico, Tennessee she was married to her husband, Franklin D. Meade of Marion, Ohio, who survives her. Julia and her husband have been residents of Marion, Ohio for 48 years. Before that they resided in Grayson.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, James, Sam, Curtis, Clifford and Haskle Lee Burton; and three sisters, Gladis Griffith, Lottie Burcker and Mary Brown.

Besides her husband, Julia is survived by one daughter, Frankie Sue (Jason) Meade-Thacker of Marion, Ohio; one son, Van A. (Lisa K.) Meade of Marion, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Kyle D. (Mandy) Belford, Brett D. Belford, Thomas Lee Belford III, Matthew A. Meade, Rachel L. Meade, Nathan E. Meade, Zachary Thacker and Colton Thacker; one great-grandchild, Hayden D. Belford; and one sister, Edna Sue Smith of Greenup.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 19, at 1 p.m. at Boyd Funeral Home in Marion, Ohio. Pastor Franklin D. Smith was the minister. Burial followed in Chapel Heights Memory Gardens.



Johnny Kenneth Bradford

1934-2008

LOST CREEK - Johnny Kenneth Bradford, 73, of Lost Creek died Saturday in Kings Daughters Medical Center.

He was born October 17, 1934 in Hopewell, a son of the late Kenneth and Lilly Martin Bradford.

He was a member of the Hopewell Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clara Mae Stephens Bradford.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Rosann Bradford and nine brothers and sisters.

His other survivors include, Johnny (Cheryl) Bradford of Grayson, Haberle (Pamela) Bradford and Jesse (April) Bradford both of Pactolus; three daughters, Derithia (Rick) Vanderpoll of Greenup, Thelma (Tom) Knipp of Lost Creek and Kimberly (Bud) Carson of Grayson; three sisters, Clara Rose of Powhatton VA, Ruth Conley and Edna Carroll both of Raceland; one brother, Jimmie Jean Bradford of Greenup; eight grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday 1 p.m. at the Malone Funeral Home by Tom Riffe, minister.  Burial followed in the Bradford Family Cemetery.



Betty Louise Barnett

1928-2008

WURTLAND – Betty Louise Barnett, 80, of Wurtland, died Monday evening at Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.

She was born February 4, 1928 in Dayton, Ohio.

A memorial service was held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Mr. Mike Barnes.



Johnnie H. Lemaster

1937-2008

ASHLAND – Johnnie H. Lemaster, 70, of Ashland, passed away peacefully at his home, Wednesday, September 17, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born September 22, 1937 at Johnson County.

Funeral services were held Saturday, at 11 a.m. at the Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland. Entombment followed in the Rose Hill Mausoleum with Military rites by VFW Post 8850, of Ironton, Ohio.



Hobert Dunaway

1934-2008

JOHNSVILLE - Hobert Dunaway, 74, died Wednesday, September 10, in MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital after a long illness.

Hobert was born on August 31, 1934, in Olive Hill.

Military graveside services, performed by American Legion Post 535, Bellville, were held Saturday, September 13, at 2 p.m. in Oak Grove Memorial Park. Pastor Larry Joe Bradley officiated.



Carla Michelle Gilliam Fliger

1973-2008

MANSFIELD, OH - Carla Michelle Gilliam Fliger’s life was tragically taken from her Friday morning, September 19.

She was born January 5, 1937 in Olive Hill.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 25 at 1 p.m. at the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home in Mansfield, Ohio. The Rev. Denny Nezrick will officiate. Burial will be in Windsor Park Cemetery.
