Betty Lee Dunaway Rose

1928-2008

OLIVE HILL - Mrs. Betty Lee Dunaway Branham Rose, age 79, of, Olive Hill, passed away Sunday evening, July 27, at her residence.

Mrs. Rose was born November 28, 1928 in Olive Hill. She was a daughter of the late Robert and Vertie Bond Dunaway.

Betty was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She retired from Cowden Manufacturing in Olive Hill and was a member of the Ross Chapel Christian Holiness Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-one years, Emerald Carl Rose; two brothers, Hubert Dunaway and Jack Dunaway; two sisters, Delenda Dunaway and Lillie Dunaway Butler; two brothers-in-law, Ray Branham and Sherman Butler.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Larry Joe Bradley of Mansfield, Ohio; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Hobert and Opal Dunaway of Mansfield, Ohio, Edwin Dunaway, Fred and Louise Dunaway, Roger and Kathy Dunaway all of Olive Hill, and Robert Dunaway Jr. and Joyce of Manchester, Ohio; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Garnett Branham and Mattie and Ewing Brown of Mansfield, Ohio, Louise and Raymond Stapleton, Margarett and James Littleton of Olive Hill; two granddaughters, Michelle and Bob Hood and Clarissa Bradley; a great-granddaughter, Amber Rae Hood; also a very special friend, Bob Knipp. She leaves other family members and friends who will sadly mourn her passing.

Funeral service were held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Wesley Dunaway and Brother Terry Dean officiating. Burial followed in the Jr. OUAM Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Richard Dunaway, Wesley Dunaway, Charles Dunaway, Greg Church, Allen Johnson and John Essman served as pallbearers.



Nelson D. Cox

1928-2008

ELLIOTT CO. - Mr. Nelson D. Cox, age 79, of Elliott County, went home to be with the Lord, Friday afternoon, August 1, at his residence.

Mr. Cox was born August 25, 1928, in Elliott County, a son of the late Mark H. and Viola Bair Cox.

Nelson was a loving father, grandfather, brother, neighbor and friend. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant United Baptist Church for forty-eight years and was a retired employee of the Elliott County Board of Education, where he worked as a custodian and maintenance man.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Pauline Skaggs Cox; one son, Larry David Cox; one infant daughter, Edith Viola Cox; three brothers, Stanley Cox, Allen Cox and Earl Cox; three sisters, Loval Barker, Glendoween Barth and Lavonna Lewis.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Brenda Cox of Morehead, Kendall and Melinda Cox of Louisa, Phillip and Mary Cox of Elliott County; three daughters and sons-in-law, Loval Faye and David Lewis of Elliott County, Wanda Mae and Greg Seagraves of Olive Hill, Alice Lee and David Ferguson of Sandy Hook; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Peggy Cox of Mansfield, Ohio; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Margie Garris of Mount Gilead, Ohio, Georgia Lee Parish and Betty Sue Johnson and her husband Darrell, both of Elliott County. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews, other family members, neighbors and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, August 4, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Elder Isaiah Vance and Elder Theodore Evans officiating. Burial followed in the Skaggs Family Cemetery on Skaggs Flat Road in Elliott County.

Grandsons serving as pallbearers were: Larry Dale Cox, Jeffrey Dean Cox, David Alan Lewis, James Seth Lewis, Joseph Adam Lewis, Michael Paul Seagraves, Eric Kendall Cox, Jonathan Ray Cox, Mark Curtis Cox,and Phillip Bradley Cox.



Dr. Robert B. “Bob” Strother

1915-2008

ST. PETERSBURG, FL. - Memorial Services for Dr. Robert B. “Bob” Strother, 92, St. Petersburg, FL, were held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Dr. Strother died on Thursday, July 24, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence. He retired with his wife in 1993 and moved to St. Petersburg, FL. He and his wife moved to Lawrence in March 2008 to live with their daughter.

He was born on September 20, 1915 in Grayson, the son of Wick & Inez .Wilhoit Strother. He grew up in Grayson and later graduated with his medical degree from the University of Kentucky.

He was a retired general surgeon. He had practiced medicine in Toledo, OH for 31 years at St. Luke’s Hospital. He formerly served as Chief of Staff. Prior to that, he was a Captain and flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy. He served during World War II and later retired as a flight surgeon from the Naval Reserves.

Dr. Strother was a member of the Shriners for many years. He was also a member of the American Medical Association.

He married Eloise Krank on October 27, 1943 in Norfolk, VA. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Dr. Myra Strother, Lawrence, KS; two sons; Robert B. Strother, Jr., Cleveland, OH, John P. Strother, Houston, TX; a brother, Jack Strother, Grayson; a sister, Wickliff Loomis, San Diego, CA, and two grandchildren (Kendall Gooden & Virginia Strother).

Sparks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Shawn E. Hamilton

1964-2008

RUSH - Shawn E. Hamilton, 43, of Rush, passed away Wednesday evening, July 30, in Kings Daughters Medical Center.

He was born October 30, 1964 in Ashland, a son of Raymond and Phyllis Bradshaw Hamilton Jr. of Rush.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Gary Hamilton of Huntington, WV and Joey Hamilton of Ashland; one special little niece, Jessica McFadden of Ashland and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins who mourn his passing.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 4, at 2 p.m. at

Malone Funeral Home in Grayson. Burial followed in the Old Grayson Cemetery.



Paul H. Canafax

1925-2008

GRANT CO. – Paul H. Canafax, 82, of Grant County, formerly of Carter County, passed away August 4, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood.

Paul was born September 6, 1925 in Olive Hill.

Funeral services will be held at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown, on Thursday, August 7, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Williamstown.



Charles L. “Lee” Spears

1945-2008

ASHLAND – Charles L. Spears, 62, of Ashland, loving husband of 41 years of Freda Henson Spears, died Monday morning at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia, following an extended illness.

Lee was born August 15, 1945 at Pike County.

Funeral services were held Thursday, at 11 a.m. at the Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland, by Rev. Gary Arrington and Rev. Bill Dillion. Burial followed at Rose Hill Burial Park.



Brady Shelton

1926-2008

WESTWOOD – Brady Shelton, 82, of Westwood, died at his residence, Saturday afternoon, following an extended illness.

Brady was born January 23, 1926 at Boyd County.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. by Brother Tim Holmes. Burial followed in the Dixon Cemetery.
