Rose Mary “Betty” Kretzer Norton
1933-2008
CONYERS, GA. – Rose Mary Norton, 74, of Conyers, Ga. went to be with the Lord on July 2, at Dekalb Medical Center, Dekalb, Ga.
She was born on August 1, 1933 in Carter Co. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Irene Kretzer.
Betty graduated from Hitchens High School in 1952 and left Carter County to work at the Norfolk Naval Base in Norfork, Va. It was there she met and married a wonderful man, Reuben Norton. She loved working in her flowers and she was a devoted wife, mother, sister and friend to all who knew her. Betty was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church in Conyers, Ga.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Ernest, Harold, Thomas, Frank, and Clefford Kretzer; two sisters, Florence Kretzer and Vivian Ross.
Her survivors include her husband of 55 years, Claude Reuben Norton; three daughters, Donna (Sterling) St. John, Kenel, S.D., Brenda (Ron) Carroll, Loganville, Ga. and Susan Marie Scroggs, Conyers, GA; six sisters, Kathleen Bellomy, Va., Doris Friar, AL., Louise Justice, KY, Dora Darden, VA, Gladys Bloodworth, TN, and Barbara Hendley, Al; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and friends to morn her passing.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 6, at Scot Ward Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gordan Norton officiating.
Interment was in Eastview Cemetery in Conyers, Ga.
Edna Maxine Wagoner Walker
1916-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mrs. Edna Maxine Wagoner Walker, age 91, of Olive Hill, passed away Friday morning, July 25, at the Saint Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
Mrs. Walker was born August 28, 1916, in Carter County, and is a daughter of the late Leslie Wagoner and Bertie Crawford Wagoner Carpenter.
Edna was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and a friend to all who knew her. She was of the Nazarene faith and had been an employee of Morton M. Rose Factory where she worked as a seamstress.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Arlan Walker; one son, Carl Walker; three brothers, Marvin Carpenter, Paul Carpenter and Joseph Carpenter; two sisters, Coleen Wagoner and Ruby Layne.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law; Charles Ray and Roberta Walker of Olive Hill; five grandchildren, Larry Walker and wife Renee, Barb Walker, Deborah Thompson and husband Bobby all of Olive Hill, Charla Pennington and husband Jamie, Glen Robert Walker and wife Sheree all of Morehead; ten great-grandchildren, and one on the way; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Glen Howard carpenter of Cleveland, Ohio; one sister, Phyllis Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly morn her passing.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother James Muncy and Brother Darrell Pelston officiating. Burial followed in the Tick Ridge Cemetery, on Tick Ridge Fork Road in Olive Hill.
Larry Walker, Glen Robert Walker, Bobby Thompson, Jamee Pennington, Greg Kiser and Alex Kiser served as pallbearers.
Albert Harold Callihan, II
1968-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mr. Albert Harold Callihan, II, age 39, of Olive Hill, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 24, at his residence in Olive Hill.
Mr. Callihan was born December 7, 1968, in Rowan County, and is a son of Charlene Hicks Callihan of Olive Hill, and the late Albert Harold Callihan, Sr.
Albert was the owner and operator of A & K Pools in Olive Hill and was of the Christian faith.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Gladys Callihan; maternal grandparents, Willard and Becky Hicks.
Other survives include his wife of twenty-three years, Robin Arrowood Callihan; one son, Albert Harold Callihan, III, of Olive Hill, one daughter, Katelyn Nicole Callihan of Olive Hill, one grandson, Shawn Kaden Webb of Olive Hill; one brother and sister-in-law, Gail and Christy of Olive Hill; paternal grandfather, Charles Callihan of Olive Hill. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family member and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, July 28, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother David Rayburn officiating. Burial followed in the Thompson-Arrowood Cemetery on Dry Branch Road in Olive Hill.
Louie Keaton, Terry Thompson, Jay Stamper, Edman Hicks, Justin Tackett and Mark Brown served as pallbearers. Andy Stamper served as honorary pallbearer.
Garl Lee “Bub” Adkins
1942-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mr. Garl Lee "Bub" Adkins, age 66, of Olive Hill, formerly of Mansfield, Ohio passed away Friday morning, July 25, at his residence in Olive Hill.
Mr. Adkins was born April 4, 1942, in Carter County, and is a son of the late Garlie and Sarah Hicks Adkins.
Garl was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him. He was retired from DSI Trucking Company where he worked as an over the road truck driver for forty-one years and owner and operator of A. & A. Flag Cars in Olive Hill. He was also a member of the Olive Hill Masonic Lodge #629 and the Ashland El Hasa Shriners.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gerald E. Adkins; one grandson, Travis L. Elkins; one brother, John Wesley Adkins; two sisters, Doretta Adkins and Joan Kay Adkins.
He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-six years, Mary Holt Adkins; six sons and daughters-in-law, Daryl K. And Barbara Adkins of Polk, Ohio, John W. And Tammy Adkins of Shelby, Ohio, Glen A. Adkins of Sheridan, Wyoming, Garl L. Jr. and Lisa Adkins of Lexington, Ohio, Steven and Debi Taylor of Wonder Lake, Illinois and Michael Taylor and Sally of Swansea, Illinois; four daughters and sons-in-law, Denise R. Elkins of Mansfield, Ohio, Opal M. Travis of New Madrid, Missouri, Angela M. Taylor and Jim of Olive Hil, Kentucky, Patricia L. and Matthew Riley of Ashland; thirty-three grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Geneva Kegley of Nicholasville, Hazel and Madison Sweeney of Mansfield, Ohio, Violet Sloan of Morehead. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members, neighbors and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral service were held 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother J. C. Bond and Brother Michael Rogers officiating. Burial followed in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill.
Will Dye, Clint Dye, Chris Dye, Jim Oney, Matt Riley and Clyde Wilson served as pallbearers.
Charles Lee Sparks
1934-2008
HITCHINS - Charles Lee Sparks, 74 of Hitchins died Friday July 4, in Hospice Care Center.
He was born June 20, 1934 in Hitchins, a son of the late William Gene and Fannie Barker Sparks.
He was retired from Big Run Coal and Clay Co., and was a former employee of Ashplundt.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Reva Jay Berry Sparks; two sons, Billy Frank Sparks and Eugene Sparks; three sisters, Kathrine Seagraves, Irene Suttles and Vadie Sparks; four brothers, Bill, John L., Bob and James Sparks.
His survivors include four daughters, Kaye (Ronnie) Wells of Hitchins, Mary and (Bazil) Gollihue of Denton, Sue (William) Bailey and Linda (Roger Horton) Lucas both of Grayson; three sons, Charles (Vickie) Sparks, Sammy Joseph Sparks, Adam (Susie) Sparks all of Hitchins; one brother, George Sparks of Irvine; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday 1 p.m. at Malone Funeral Home by Delmar Rogers. Burial followed in the Berry - Sparks family cemetery.
Jacob A. (Jay) Miller IV
1959-2008
ASHLAND - Jacob A. (Jay) Miller IV, 49, of Ashland, passed away Monday, July 21, due to a sudden illness.
He was born April 4, 1959 in Olive Hill, a son of Wanda Mann of Ashland, and the late Jacob A. (J.A.) Miller III.
He was employed in telecommunications.
He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Florence Flaugher of Grayson; three sons, Jacob A. Miller V, Christopher Lee Miller and Jason Allen Miller all of Ashland; two sisters, Shelley (Eugene) Thompson of Salt Lick, and Marjorie (Mike) James of Ashland; three brothers, Tim (Linda) Smith and Mike (Cheryl) Miller all of Grayson and David (Tedi Sue) Miller of Port St. Lucie, FL and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at the Malone Funeral Home with John Sargent, minster. Burial followed in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery.
Bertha Eldridge Wagoner
1964-2008
ISONVILLE - Bertha Eldridge Wagoner, age 44, of Isonville, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, July 22, in the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Ms. Wagoner was born January 3, 1964, in Elliott County, a daughter of the late Dock Con and Gustalva Sparks Eldridge.
Bertha was a caregiver and homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Homer Eldridge, Benny Eldridge and Jeff Eldridge.
She is survived by one son, Jeremy Wagoner of Olive Hill; three daughters, Jessica Watts of Isonville, Casey Wagoner of Inez, and Katie Wagoner of Isonville; two grandchildren, Jessie James Watts of Isonville, and Dayla Lashea Wagoner of Olive Hill; two brothers, Henry Eldridge of Isonville, and James Eldridge of Olive Hill; six sisters, Wandalene Smith of Sandy Hook, Lorene Marler of Morehead, Dollie Skaggs, Connie E. Lewis and Ellen Porter all of Isonville, and Martha Hudson of Hartford City, Indiana. She also leaves a host of special nieces and nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, in the chapel of the Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook, with Brother Mike Adkins and Brother Darrell Fyffe officiating. Burial followed in the Wagoner Family Cemetery on Anderson Branch Road in Elliott County.
Dustin Tackett, T. J. Eldridge, Marcus Moore, Scotty Hamilton, Paul Dale Hamilton, Wesley McDowell, Randy Allen Gumm, Tennyson Gumm, James Paul Wagoner and Jeremy Boggs served as pallbearers.
Myrtle B. Everman
1913-2008
GRAYSON - Myrtle B. Everman, 94, of Grayson, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 23, in Kings Daughters Medical Center.
She was born September 3, 1913 in Carter County, a daughter of the late Hucy and Anna McCleese Williams.
She was a homemaker and member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church where she was also a former Sunday school teacher.
Also preceding her in death was her husband of 52 years, Wilis J. Everman in 1985; two sons, William John Everman and Wayne H. Everman.
Her survivors include one son, Hugh Everman of Grayson; one daughter, Ann (Carl) Worthington of South Shore; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted 12 noon Saturday, July 26, at Malone Funeral Home by Elders John Lybrook and Tim Underwood. Burial followed in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Evelyn Sue (Glancy) Branam
1945-2008
GRAYSON - Evelyn Sue (Glancy) Branam 62, of Grayson died Thursday July 24, at Kings Daughters Medical Center with her loving family by her side.
She was born November 25, 1945 in Hitchins, a Daughter of the late Clement and Cora Belle Campbell Glancy and was formerly employed with Sitel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Scott Branam and her niece Gerry Lynn Mullins.
Her survivors include her husband of 39 years, Arthur Branam; three daughters, Kimberly Ann (Paul) Moore of Rush, Diana (Doug) Hall of Grayson, Crystal Branam of Grayson; one son, Orville (Ramona) Branam of Barboursville WV; five sisters, Yvonne (Jerry) Mullins of Hitchins, Janice (Corbit) Sweeney of Hitchins, Charlotte (Jim) Boggs of Hamilton OH, Sheila McCoy (Billy) of Willard, Judy Carroll (Junior) of Hitchins; five grandchildren, Dougie (Tonya) Hall of Grayson, T.J. Moore and Bryant Moore both of Rush, Tiffanie Moore of Summit, Scotty Branam of Barboursville; two great-grandchildren, Adien Moore and Brandon Hall.
Funeral Services were conducted Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at the Malone Funeral Home with Terry Harris and Tim Hall, ministers. Burial followed in the McGuire/Fairview Cemetery.
Jane Day Tyson Fraley

SUMMITT – Jane Day Tyson Fraley, 64, of Summitt, wife of James R. Fraley, died Monday morning at her home following a short illness.
Jane was born June 8, 1944 at Anniston, Alabama.
Funeral services were held Thursday, at 11 a.m. at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland, by Brother Jason Porter. Interment was in the Rose Hill Burial Park.
Carroll Dae Vanderpool
1922-2008
WESTWOOD – Carroll Dae “Mammur” Keaton Vanderpool, 86, of Westwood, died Sunday morning at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born February 12, 1922 in Salyersville.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Burial Park.
Lois Mae “Doll Baby” Clark
1939-2008
OLDTOWN – Lois Mae “Doll Baby” Clark, 68, of Oldtown, departed this life at her home to be with her Lord and Savior, Sunday, July 27.
Mrs. Clark was born November 30, 1939 in Greenup.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Pastor John Lybrook. Burial will be in the Virgin-Latimer Cemetery in Oldtown.
Zona Mildred Gipson
1923-2008
GRAYSON – Zona Mildred Gipson, 85, of Grayson, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 25, at King’s Daughters’ Medical Center in Ashland.
Mrs. Gipson was born June 9, 1923 in Lewis County.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, July 28, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Rev. George Smith. Burial followed in the Kehoe Cemetery at Kehoe.
