Adron Seth “Andy” Whisman
1977-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mr. Adron Seth “Andy” Whisman, age 30, of Olive Hill, passed away Tuesday morning, July 8, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident while on his way to work. Seth was at no fault during this terrible tragedy.
Seth was born December 14, 1977, in Rowan County, and is the son of Lynn and Reva Boggs Whisman of Olive Hill.
Seth graduated from West Carter High School in 1996 and was a telecommunication employee where he worked as an installer. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend to all who knew him. He enjoyed being outdoors, spending time playing with his nephew and nieces and hanging out with his friends. Seth was a member of the Pleasant Valley Gospel Tabernacle.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Seth Whisman and Norma Hislip Whisman Jessie; maternal grandparents, Leonidas and Irene Horton Boggs.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Christy and Heath Patton of Olive Hill, Wendy and Jacob Green of Grayson, and B. J. Whisman of Olive Hill; three nieces and one nephew, Hayla Patton, Solomon Patton, Hadessah Patton and Aalyah Patton. He also leaves several aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Randy Binion officiating. Burial followed in the Boggs Family Cemetery, on Ross Chapel Road in Elliott County.
Mike Oppenheimer, Rick Butler, Jeff Nolen, Bruce Layne, Ronnie Boggs and Mike PâSimer, Allen Porter, Vernon ÎBunnyâ Duncan, and Joey McCleese served as pallbearers.
Clifford Griffith
1937-2008
RUSH - Clifford Griffith, 71, of Rush, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, July 13, in Kings Daughters Medical Center with his family at his side.
He was born January 14, 1937 in Wharton, WV, a son of the late George Inest and Claris Thelma Jones Griffith.
He worked as a Volkswagen Mechanic for 30 years and then retired from Rental Uniform/Cintas after 25 years of service. He was a former coach for Boyd County American Little League Baseball, Cannonsburg Elementary Basketball, Optimists Girls Basketball and was an avid U.K. Fan. He was a member of the Garner Missionary Baptist Church, was a Kentucky Colonel and graduated from Boyd County High School in 1956.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Lou Griffith and Helen Irene Tiller.
His survivors include his wife of 49 years, Donna Jean Riggs Griffith; three sons, Russ (Nikki) Griffith of Cannonsburg, Sam (Tammy) Griffith of Rush, and Aaron (Teresa) Griffith of Crane Hill, Alabama; one brother, George Elmer Griffith of Rush;
grandchildren, Russell Griffith, Seth Patton, Jake Griffith, Casey Griffith, Wade Griffith and Heather (Chris Ruggles); three great-grandchildren, Johnathon, Samantha and Gracie Ruggles; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 17, at 11 a.m. at the Malone Funeral Home with Gary Arrington and Dicky Tiller, ministers. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, July 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday after 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. His grandsons will serve as the pallbearers.
Mark Edward Pyle
1963-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mr. Mark Edward Pyle, age 45, of Jordan Fork in Olive Hill, passed away Monday, July 7, at his residence.
Mr. Pyle was born February 7, 1963 in Scioto County, Ohio, a son of Janet Ruby Pyle Holcomb and the late Clarence Pyle.
He is also preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Joe Sowards.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Carolyn Sparks Pyle; two daughters and a son-in-law, Stephanie and Rodney Ball and Kimberly Pyle of Carter City; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Rick and Nancy Ruby of Columbus, Ohio, Steve and Debbie Pyle of Deland, Florida, Ted and B.J. Miller of Portsmouth, Ohio, Eddie and Jessica Pyle of Tennessee and James and Donna Holcomb of South Shore; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Melinda and Leonard Timmer of Port Orange, Florida, Michelle Sowards and Marcella and Paul Masonbauker of Columbus, Ohio; one grandson, Jordan Ball and a granddaugher on the way. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery, on Route 2, Olive Hill.
John McGlone, Eugene Dean, Rodney Ball, Ted Miller, Johnny Miller, Kevin McGlone, Scott Brickey and David Willoughby served as pallbearers.
Arla Barnhill Alexander
1915-2008
CARTER CO. - Arla Barnhill Alexander, daughter of the late William David and Rebecca Barnhill and wife of the late Benjamin Franklin Alexander passed away at Hospice of Dayton on July 8, nine days short of her 93rd birthday.
Arla was born on July 17, 1915 in Carter County, and spent her early life in Ashland. Her husband Frank, who worked for Kentucky Power Company, was relocated to the Grayson, area where they resided for many years.
In 1982, following Mr. Alexander’s retirement they moved to Morehead, where they founded and operated Alexander’s Red Cottage Gallery. In 1994, following the close of their business the Alexander’s moved to Otterbein Retirement Center in Lebanon, Ohio.
Mrs. Alexander, who began painting as a grandmother in 1963, quickly became a well recognized artist working in many mediums. Although self taught, she mastered the art successfully, painting in a realistic style. Some of her work was commercially reproduced in the form of prints and home dŽcor laminated plaques which still appear periodically for sale on eBay. She was commissioned to do many paintings, one of which was done for the Governors Mansion in Kentucky.
Upon moving to Otterbein she won recognition not only for her artistic abilities but for her poetry and short story writing as well, winning awards in three categories. Up to the time of her death at age 92, she was a prolific artist, painting hundreds of small note sheets and smaller framed pictures which were sold in the Creative Arts Center at Otterbein. Over the years, Mrs. Alexander became well known on the Otterbein Campus and was easily identified by the ever changing flowers that always decorated the basket on her electric cart.
Mrs. Alexander was a member of the congregation of the Otterbein Lebanon United Methodist Church at Otterbein.
Mrs. Alexander is preceded in death by her husband Frank and her sisters Irene and Mamie. She is survived by one son, David Alexander of Centerville, Ohio; two granddaughters, Debbie Adkins of Huntington, West Virginia and Michelle Alexander of Springboro, Ohio; as well as six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 11 at the Otterbein Chapel at 11 a.m. Rev. James Ludwick, a long-time friend, will be officiating. Interment followed beside her husband in the Otterbein Cemetery.
James Fryer
1925-2008
RUSH - James Fryer, 83, of Rush, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 12, at his residence.
He was born September 17, 1925 in Greenup, a son of the late Jesse and Viola Nolan Fryer.
He was a laborer and a member of the Rush Freewill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Evans Fryer.
His survivors include two sons, James Ernest Fryer and Larry Wayne Fryer both of Rush; and one sister, Zella Salyers of Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 16, at 11 a.m. at the Malone Funeral Home with Scott Lambert, minister. Burial will be in the Cribbs Hill Cemetery.
Doris Harrington
1911-2008
GRAYSON – Doris Harrington died Friday, July 11.
A service was held at Tobias Funeral Home Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Ave. Dayton, Ohio.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, July 15 at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Margaret B. Huff Porter
1931-2008
ASHLAND – Margaret Brewer Huff Porter, 77, of Ashland, died Tuesday evening following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at the Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial followed in the Dixon Cemetery.
