James “Jim” Burchett
1938-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mr. James "Jim" Burchett, age 70, Henderson Branch Road in Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday morning, April 16, at his residence.
He was born February 27, 1938 in Carter County, and is a son of the late Edward and Myrtle Daily Burchett.
Jim was a former employee of the General Refractories Company in Hitchens, where he worked as a mason. He was a Christian and a thirty-five year member of the Grahn Hill Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Burchett.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty-five years, Virgie Skaggs Burchett; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lowell and Jennifer Burchett of Ashland, Michael and Christy Burchett and Ronnie Burchett all of Olive Hill; four grandchildren, Curtis Burchett, Ashley Burchett, Aaron Burchett and Veronica Burchett all of Olive Hill; one brother and sister-in-law; Dave and Linda Burchett of Olive Hill; five sisters and three brothers-in-law; Lois Ramey of Carter City, Eunice Payne of Corbin, Mary and Arthur Lewis of Grayson, Phyllis and J. C. Frazier of Mount Sterling, Linda and Jerry Evans of Mansfield. Ohio; several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral service were held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Jimmy Barker and Brother Bobby Day officiating. Burial followed in the Burchett-Daily Cemetery in Olive Hill.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Carrie Lou Castelle Porter
1919-2008
GRAYSON - Carrie Lou Castelle Porter, 88, of Grayson, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, April 15, in Kings Daughters Medical Center.
She was born April 25, 1919 at Olive Hill, a daughter of the late James and Susie Tackett Castelle.
Also preceding her in death was her husband, Roy Porter; two brothers, Harklin Evans and Elijah Evans; one sister, Gladys Justice; and a granddaughter, Jill Kennedy Burton.
She was a homemaker and member of the Willard Church of Christ.
Her survivors include three sons, Roy Harlan (Rebecca) Porter of Huntsville, Alabama, Sammy (Carolyn) Porter and Jerry (Judy) Porter all of Grayson; three daughters, Rhoda (Bill) Harper, Juanita Kennedy and Rosella Porter all of Grayson; one brother, Ford Evans of Ashland; two sisters, Garnett Hall of Middletown, OH and Katie Colley of Columbus, OH; 17 grandchildren, Rob (Jeannie) Harper, Sherry (Rick) McGlone, Dane (Debbie) Harper, Jody Harper, Mark (Mary Ann) Kennedy, Dinah (Dean) Walters, John (Jeanetta) Kennedy, Rodney (Stacy) Porter, Timothy Porter, Regina (Doug) Porter and Ricky Porter all of Grayson, Michael (Lucille) Porter of California, Patricia (Jeff) Brown and Debra (Sonny) Davis all of Huntsville, AL, Teresa (David) O’Bryan, Jerry Porter Jr. and Christopher Porter all of Grayson; 23 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Bernard Kouns and Mike Harper, ministers. Burial followed in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Robert “Joe” Bush
1937-2008
HOUSTON, TX – Robert Joe Bush, 70, of Houston, Texas passed away Sunday, April 13, in Clear Lake Regional Hospital.
He was born September 14, 1937 in Grayson.
Joe was a 1956 graduate of East Bank High School in East Bank, West Virginia. He was also a veteran of the United State Air Force. At the time of his death, he was employed by Wal-Mart on Eldorado Blvd. Joe was loved by all who knew him and was a stranger to no one. A visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Monday, April 14 at the Fairmont Funeral Home at Pasadena. A celebration of his life was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 15 in the chapel of Fairmont Funeral Home with Alan Rigsby officiating. Burial followed in the Grand View Memorial Park at Pasadena.
Joe was survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann Bush; a daughter, Tammy Bush and friend Sal Cardona of Bastrop; two sons and daughters-in-law, Timmy and Shirley Bush of La Porte and Jerry and Tracy Bush of Clear Lake; two granddaughters, Kristen and Kari Bush of Clear Lake; one grandson, Joey Bush of La Porte; four brothers, Bill, Ron, Roy, and Larris Bush of Grayson; along with numerous sister and brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Mildred Bush, along with his brother Glenn Bush of Grayson.
Sylvia LeMaster
1918-2008
GRAYSON - Sylvia LeMaster, age 89, of Grayson, died Saturday morning at the Golden Living Center in Vanceburg.
She was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Jack and Sarah Hamilton LeMaster.
She was of the Pentecostal faith and was a former factory worker in the Chicago area in the 1950’s.
She is survived by one half-sister, Madge LeMaster of Sun City, AZ; one half-brother, Edwin LeMaster of London; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a special aunt who she dearly loved and who had been her care-giver, Carrie Stamper of Grayson.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 22 at 1 p.m. at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Ron Arnett will officiated the service. Burial followed in the McGuire/Fairview Cemetery at Hitchins.
Sarah Janie Harris Cushard
1930-2008
VANCEBURG - Mrs. Sarah Janie Harris Cushard, age 78, of Vanceburg, passed away Wednesday evening, April 16, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
She was born February 27, 1930 in Lewis County, and is a daughter of the late Lacey and Bessie Hobbs Harris.
Janie was a homemaker, loving wife and mother. She had been a Christian for over sixty years and was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of twenty years, Joe Henry Cushard; a son, Lacy Riley; four brothers, Haywood Harris, Boonie Harris, Arthur Harris and Val Harris; three sisters, May Ginn, Verna Cushard and Della Lewis.
She is survived by one son, Homer Cushard of Vanceburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Inez and Kenneth Stidham of Vanceburg; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Stidham and April Smith; one great-granddaughter, Tracy Smith; one sister, Artie Morgan of Fairborn, Ohio; several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly mourn her passing.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Camp Dix, with Brother Tony Corns and Brother Homer Nolan officiating. Burial followed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Lewis County.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
