Otto Evans
1929-2008
GRAYSON - Otto Evans, 78, of Wilson Creek in Grayson, died Wednesday, April 23, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital following an extended illness.
He was born July 12, 1929 at Gravel Lick in Carter County. He was the son of the late James and Annie Adams Evans and Cora Shaffer Evans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Lillian “Bobbie” Hollingsworth Evans and Elaine Griger Evans; his brothers, August, Johnny and Lovell Evans and his sisters, Hazel Evans, Hager Bostick and Catherine Fryer.
Otto was a retired heavy equipment mechanic that worked with local companies Rebel Coal, Ruth Equipment and Economy Barge.
Surviving Otto are his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Bonnie Evans and Mike and Bobbie Evans of Baltimore, MD and William Griger of Grayson; he is also survived by his sister, Della Marie Evans Ingels of Ashland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Ramona Evans of Brunswick, GA and Paul and Geneviene Evans of Greenup; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 26, at 11 a.m. at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Lawrence Felty, minister. Burial will be in the Otto Evans Family Cemetery on Wilson Creek.
Joshua Lee “Josh” Stamper
1979-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mr. Joshua Lee "Josh" Stamper, age 29, of Bethel Ridge Road, Olive Hill, passed away Saturday morning, April 26, in Olive Hill.
Mr. Stamper was born February 14, 1979, in Boyd County, and is the son of Virgil Ray and Kathy Click Stamper of Olive Hill.
Josh was employed as a telecommunication installer. He was a 1997 graduate of West Carter High School and was of the Christian faith.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Ethel Humphreys Stamper; maternal grandparents, William Harlan and Inez Opal Erwin Click.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Traci Blevins of Olive Hill; one niece, Courtney Blevins; He also leaves a host of other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Brother Lowell Webb officiated the service. Burial followed in the Morgan Cemetery in Lewis County.
Alex "Peanut" Click, Allen Click, Tell Click, Clay Bloomfield, Eugene Dean and Davy Stamper served as pallbearers.
Harold Douglas Carroll
1934 - 2008
GRAYSON - Harold Douglas Carroll, age 73, of Grayson, passed from this life to be with his heavenly father on Friday, April 25, in Cornerstone Hospital, following a brief illness.
He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 3, 1934, in Carter County, and was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Hattie Smith Carroll.
Mr. Carroll was a member of Barretts Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was retired from Kentucky Electric Steel, where he worked for 34 years, he was a crane operator; he was a farmer his entire life. He was a member of United Steel Workers Local 7054.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Reuben Carroll, Walter Carroll, Jr. and Raymond Carroll; a sister, Marie Nolting; a father-in-law, Harry Pope; and a brother-in-law, Tom Pope.
Harold is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy Jane Pope Carroll, of Grayson. They had a friendship and love few people have been blessed to share. They cherished their three children, a son, William Douglas Carroll and wife Shirley, of Grayson; a son, Gregory (Greg) Wayne Carroll and wife, Patti, of Webbville; a daughter, Susan Mignon Colley and husband, Randy, of Grayson.
His loving presence and laughter will be missed by two sisters, Laura Mae Carroll, of Connersville, Indiana; Betty Louise Prichard and husband, Doug, of Franklin, Ohio; mother-in-law, Faye Pope Burnett and husband, Clayton, of Grayson; four sisters-in-law, Maxine Carroll, of Anderson, Indiana; Maxine Carroll, of Grayson; Opal Wilson, of Dover, Tennessee; Sue Wellman and husband, Harold, of Grayson; brother-in-law, Tony Pope and wife, Bee, of Grayson; four granddaughters, Dawn Keffer, Whitney Carroll, Brandy Colley, and Breianna Colley; three step grandchildren, Willard Knipp, III, Lisa Salmons, and Crystal Shepherd; and seven great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by many other beloved family and friends.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Barretts Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Jim Stephens delivered a message of faith and hope, and Pastor Brian Bush delivered a heartfelt eulogy. Special music was by the Barretts Creek Baptist Church Choir. Burial followed in East Carter County Memory Gardens, in Grayson.
Ronald E. Bowling
1935-2008
CIRCLEVILLE, OH – Ronald E. Bowling, 73, of Circleville, Ohio passed away April 25, in Columbus.
He was born April 25, 1935 in Carter County, a son of Commodore and Virgie (Totten) Bowling.
Ronald was retired from Continental Can and an Army Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Edgel and Clifford and sisters, Daphene and Charlene Sperry, Rose Pennington, Claire Caudill, Anna Faye and Cora Frances Bowling and Agnes French.
Ronald is survived by his wife, Lillie (Coffee) Bowling; sons, Bruce (Tammy) Bowling of Amanda and Gregory (Linda) Bowling of Lancaster; daughters, Jeanette Reid and Bonny (Richard) Phebus of Circleville; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Commodore Bowling, Jr. of Grayson; sisters, Lucy (Carl) Ramsey of Oberlin and Imogene McCoy of Baltimore, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be April 30, at 11 a.m. at the Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville. Interment will be in Floral Hills Cemetery.
Earsel Ray Davis
1920-2008
DENTON - Earsel Ray Davis, 88, of Denton, passed away on Friday, April 25, at Kings Daughters Medical Center.
He was born February 24, 1920 at Elkhurst, WV a son of the late Conrad Isaiah and Susie Ellison Davis.
He was a former Coal Miner, Shipyards Mechanic, Boilermaker with local #105 and a member of the Straight Creek Independent Freewill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Ina Newton Davis, Vivian Withrow Davis and Juanita Mullins Davis; two sons, Ernie Ray Davis and Earsel Gordon Davis and a grandson, Bruce Dwayne Davis.
His survivors include two sons, Cecil Isaac Davis of Denton and Richard Davis of Erlanger; one daughter, Deanna Heffner of Olive Hill; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
There will be no public services. Malone Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Roscoe Miller
1947 - 2008
GRAYSON - Roscoe Miller, 60, of Grayson, died Wednesday morning, April 16, at his residence.
He was born October 31, 1947, in Carter County to the late William Henry and Mary Ellen (Deerfield) Miller.
Also preceding him in death were three grandchildren and two brothers, Charles W. and Jimmy L. Miller.
He was self employed in auto body repair, and enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Roscoe is survived by his wife Christian Miller; four daughters, Connie Pope, Barbara Horn, Ruie Harris and Anna Richardson; two step-sons, Ben Wheeler and Samual Wheeler; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers, Fred G. Deerfield of Elizabeth City, N.C., Johnny Miller of Willard, Oscar Miller of Hitchins, Ray Miller and Gary Miller of Grayson and five sisters, Shelia Lassley of Strawberry, AR, Brenda Brinser of Grove City, OH, Wanda Cains of Upper Sandusky, OH, Karen Young and Sylvia McDavid both of Grayson.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday April 18 at 1 p.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home. Grant Sammons officiated the service. Burial followed at the McGuire Cemetery on Fairview Hill.
Robert “Richard” Mabry
1940-2008
MANSFIELD, OH – Robert “Richard” Mabry, age 67, of Mansfield, Ohio passed away Sunday, April 20, at Medcentral Mansfield Hospital.
He was born June 2, 1940, in Olive Hill, he was the son of Cletis and Tennie Goodan Mabry.
He retired from Mansfield Plating, was involved with his neighborhood watch program, and was a classic car fan.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Kiser Mabry; his children, Angela (Phillip) Stephens, Dee (Brad) Grossman, Richard (Laura) Mabry, and Kim Pendleton, all of Mansfield; grandchildren, Samantha, David, Danielle, Kierstin, D.J., Justin, Kamrin, and Heather, all of Mansfield; great-grandchildren, Mason, Taylor, Brittany, and Kaylee; siblings, Betty, June (Dempsey), Gay, Jay, Toby (George), Rose (Darrell), and Gene; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, in Kiser Cemetery. Oney-Henderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
James E. Pennington
1936-2008
ARGILLITE – James E. Pennington of Argillite passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 22, after an extended illness.
He was born July 29, 1936 in Greenup, the son of the late Charles and Alva Pennington.
Graveside services were held on Friday, at 11 a.m. by Bro. Frank Hackworth at Kirby Flats Cemetery. Preston Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Albert Wilburn
1921-2008
GARRISON - Albert Wilburn, 86, of Garrison passed away Thursday morning, April 24 of sudden illness.
Albert was born July 1, 1921, a son of the late Silas Wilburn and the late Virginia Horsley Wilburn.
Funeral services were held at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 28 with visitation after 10 a.m. Monday.
Burial followed in the Albert Wilburn Family Cemetery in Greenup County.
