Travis Alan King
1979-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mr. Travis Alan King, age 29, of Horton Lane, Olive Hill, passed away Friday evening, April 11, at his residence.
Mr. King was born March 1, 1979, in Oakland County, Michigan, and is a son of Gary Alan King and Sharolyn Brown King both of Michigan.
Travis was an employee of Jefferson Cogswell CPA Office in Morehead, and was of the Church of God faith.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother and an infant sister; parental grandfather, Thurston King.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Daven King of Canton, Michigan; three brothers, Roger Birdsall of Mio, Michigan, Doug Fiedler of Monroe, Michigan, and Chris Fiedler of San Diego, California; two sisters, Shana Birdsall of Highland, Michigan and Sharon Parsons of Howell, Michigan; paternal grandmother, Virginia King Salyer; he also leaves a host of other family members, neighbors and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Paul Zornes, Brother Jason Johnson and Brother Dwayne Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Thomas King Cemetery on Rose Ridge Road in Olive Hill.
His cousins will serve as pallbearers.
Lucille Smedley Carroll
1948-2008
SOLDIER - Lucille Smedley Carroll, age 59, of Blue Hall Road, Soldier, passed away Wednesday, April 9, at her residence.
She was born April 12, 1948, in Morgan County, and is the daughter of Evalee Wilder Smedley of Soldier, and Murlin Smedley, who preceded her in death in 1993.
One daughter, Christi Ann Carroll; and one brother, David Smedley; also preceded her in death.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Tom L. Carroll; three sons, Larry Mynhier of Olive Hill, Chris Mynhier of Frankfort, Eric Carroll of Olive Hill; one daughter, Stacy Carroll of Soldier; two brothers, Mike Smedley of Morehead, and Jimmy Smedley of Soldier; three sisters, Gail Hussey of Owingsville, Carol Cook and Teresa Lee, both of Olive Hill; and eight grandchildren.
Mrs. Carroll was a homemaker.
Funeral services were conducted 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Carroll and Rev. Lonnie Conn officiating. Burial followed in the Wilder Cemetery in Morgan County.
Pallbearers will be Larry Mynhier, Chris Mynhier, Jimmy Smedley, James Lee, Lawrence Martin, and Michael Smedley.
Ova ÒBig OÓ Stephens
1950-2008
SANDY HOOK - Mr. Ova "Big O" Stephens, age 57, of Sandy Hook, passed away Sunday evening, April 13, in the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Mr. Stephens was born October 12, 1950 in Elliott County, a son of Richard and Katherine White Stephens of Sandy Hook.
He is survived by his wife of eighteen years, Tammy Simmons Stephens; one son, Devin Stephens of Sandy Hook; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Arville and Connie Stephens, Dee and Teresa Stephens, Richard "Witty" and Connie Stephens all of Sandy Hook; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Eva Jane and Charlie Barker of Willard, Martha and Bobby Ferguson, Mary and Carl Sparks, Geraldine and Dave Riley , Donna and David Barker all of Sandy Hook.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in the chapel of the Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook, with Brother George Stafford and Brother Roscoe Lewis, Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in the Elliott County Memory Gardens in Sandy Hook.
Donald Ray ÒDonnieÓ Brown
1946-2008
OLIVE HILL - Mr. Donald Ray "Donnie" Brown, age 61, went to be with his loving Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 13, at his residence on Carter Cave Road, Olive Hill.
He was born September 3, 1946 in Grayson, and is a son of the late Jewell Barker Brown and James Earcel Brown.
Donnie was a life long resident of Olive Hill leaving home for an extended period of time only to serve his country as a member of the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, relative and friend. His retirement after thirty-eight years at A K Steel enabled him to volunteer in many capacities in serving his church, his community and his friends. Donnie was a dedicated worker and member of the Three Pines Freewill Baptist Church, a volunteer driver and worker in the Meals on Wheels program and in the Olive Hill Historical Society. In addition, he enjoyed his memberships and relationships from the Masonic Lodge #629, El Hasa Shrine, Scottish Rite Valley of Covington, and American Legion Post #138.
In addition to his parents, Donnie was preceded in death by a beloved brother, Daryl Wayne Brown, Sr.
He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-six years, Debra Ann Damron Brown; two daughters and a son-in-law, Charity Rae Brown of Olive Hill, Ginger Lee Brown Clay and husband David of Lexington; one son and his fiancŽ, James Seth Brown and Dee Dee Yeagle of Bowling Green; one grandson, Grant David Clay, (who was much loved by his "Paps") of Lexington; a very special uncle (friend, father, brother) and aunt, James E. "Jim" and Wilma Jean Barker of Olive Hill. In addition, Donnie will be greatly missed by his other relatives and many friends.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at the Three Pines Freewill Baptist Church in Olive Hill, with Brother Lewis Davis and Brother Gary Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery on Garvin Ridge Road in Olive Hill.
Military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post #138 of Olive Hill at the cemetery.
Jamie Damron, Roscoe Rogers, Larry Taylor, Wayne Jones, Roger Layne, Danny Lowe, Michael Lowe, Moe Crawford, Sonny Huffman and Jeff Kiser will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be, Jim Bond, Edwin Kiser, Lowell Mosier, Jeep Hensley, Marvin Gearhart, John Stapleton, Challas Callahan, Willis Bond, Austin Carter, Donnie Parker, Melvin McDowell, Jim Webb, Lonnie Tackett, Mickey Greenhill, David Brown and Gary Brown.
Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, is in charge of all the arrangements.
George Ralph Turner
1929-2008
OLIVE HILL Ð George Ralph Turner, age 79, of Olive Hill, passed away Wednesday, April 9, at his home on Shannon Avenue.
He was born March 15, 1929 in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Dorsey and Bertha Richie Turner.
George was a Sgt. First Class in the United States Army from 1950-1955 where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal (Bronze Star), the National Defense Service Medal, the United States National Service Medal, and the Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant. He was a Kentucky Colonel and retired as a construction foreman after 40 or more years of building homes. In his early years he also played for a Minor League Baseball Team in Florida.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by three brothers, Burton Turner, John Turner, Glen Turner; and one sister, Thelma Barnett.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Shirlon Cobb Turner; a daughter, Brenda Wescott, her husband, Eddie, and their daughter Lindsay, who resides in Louisville.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home. Larry Harris officiated the service. Burial followed in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Louisville.
James Walter Sullivan
1921-2008
GRAYSON - James Walter Sullivan, 86, of Grayson, went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 7, at Liberty Nursing Home in Wheelersburg, OH.
He was born June 1, 1921, at Carter County, a son of the late Mary Sullivan.
He was retired from Grayson Rural Electric Company, was a Farmer, a WWII Army Veteran and was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Iona Kitchen Virgin and Mabel Gose; one brother, Ed Sullivan and a grandson, Roy Lee Newland Jr.
His survivors include his wife of 62 years, Delphia Kibbey Sullivan of Grayson; six daughters, Minnie Inez Sullivan of Grayson, Wilma Blankenship of Ashland, Pauline White of Ashland, Hazel (and Randy) Boggs of Greenup, Edna Fraley, of Grayson and Christine (and Jack) Leadingham of Grayson; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson. Burial followed in the Sullivan Family Cemetery.
Robert McGinnis, Sr.
1932-2008
ASHLAND - Robert McGinnis, Sr., 76, of Ashland formally of Grayson went to be with his Lord on Friday, April 11.
He was born March 5, 1932 in Carter City, a son of the late John Henry and Sarah Staggs McGinnis.
He was a member and a Deacon at Smith Creek Christian Holiness Church and a retired truck driver.
He was preceded in death by a sister Mae Blankenship; and one brother, Eugene McGinnis.
His survivors include his wife of 51 years Anna Hill McGinnis of Ashland; two sons, Robert McGinnis Jr. of Ashland and Michael McGinnis of Clearwater, FL; one daughter, Sharon Porter of Hitchins; one brother, Tom McGinnis of Catlettsburg; two sisters, Betty Burnett of Ashland and Fern Burnett of Iron Hill; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Malone Funeral Home with Michael McGinnis and Bill Burnett officiating. Burial followed in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Jaime Jarrell
1955-2008
ASHLAND - Mr. Jaime Jarrell, age 52, of Bluebird Drive, Ashland, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 12, at the family farm on Boathouse Hill Road in Olive Hill.
Mr. Jarrell was born November 19, 1955, in Baumholder, Germany, and is a son of the late Frederick B. and Sara Lou Adams Jarrell.
He was an employee of Ashland, Inc. in Russell, as an accountant. He was also an associate with Century 21, Brooks Wells Enterprises. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Olive Hill and also attended Bridges Christian Church in Russell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mae Cline Bond.
Jaime is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeffrey and Felice Jarrell of Olive Hill, Jack and Joetta Jarrell of Ashland, Jhan and Sandra Jarrell of Olive Hill; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jada Jarrell and W. Lynn Johnson, Julie and Steve Porter all of Olive Hill; two step-granddaughters, Sydney T. Wright and Kaitlyn Utley; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Dave Shanklin officiating. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Norman Griffith, Jr.
1933-2008
NEW CARLISLE, OH Ð Norman Griffith, Jr., 74, formerly of New Carlisle, Ohio passed away Thursday, April 3.
He was born October 25, 1933 in Stevens, the son of the late Norman, Sr. and Cecilia Griffith. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired from Globe, Dayton, Ohio. He was an active member in VFW Post #286, AmVets, American Legion and Eagles.
He is survived by his children, Edgar and Barbara Griffith of Troy, Ohio, Jack Griffith of Tipp City, Ohio, Teresa and Bob Peters, Shelia and Frank Beel all of New Carlisle, Ohio; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Russell and Lloyd Griffith; sister, Lorraine Salyers; special friends, Beth McNabb and Maggie; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Helen; brothers, Boyd, Virgil and Lowell; sisters, Naomi and Opal.
A gathering of family and friends were held on Tuesday, April 8, at the Trostel, Chapman, Dunbar, and Fraley Funeral Home of New Carlisle, Ohio. Funeral services were held that following Wednesday.
Verna Harris Cushard
1933-2008
VANCEBURG - Mrs. Verna Harris Cushard, age 74, of Holly Branch in Vanceburg, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 6, at the Golden Living center in Vanceburg.
.Mrs. Cushard was born October 14, 1933, in Lewis County, and is a daughter of the late Lacey and Bessie Hobbs Harris.
Verna was a homemaker and a member of the Cedar Grove Pentecostal Church in Vanceburg.
Inn addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of fifty-nine years, William Nicholas Cushard; two daughters, Mary McClurg and Barbara Ann Cushard; one sister, May Ginn; four brothers, Haywood Harris, Boonie Harris, Arthur Harris, and Val Harris; three grandchildren, Connie McClurg, Sarah Cushard and Tasha Marie Parmer.
She is survived by five sons, Jerry Cushard, Jack Cushard, Johnny Cushard, Timmy Cushard and Mark Cushard all of Vanceburg; one daughter, Cathy Clark of Portsmouth, Ohio; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Artie Morgan and Della Lewis of Fairborn, Ohio, Janie Cushard of Vanceburg; she also leaves a host of other family members, neighbors and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral service were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Camp Dix, with Brother Homer Nolan officiating. Burial followed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery on Holly Branch Road in Vanceburg.
Freddie Cushard, John Cushard, Ray McClug, Michael McClurg, George Gilliam, Billy Ray McClurg, Chris Gilliam, Michael Kennedy and Ray Adams served as pallbearers.
Frances Irene Evans
1929-2008
ASHLAND Ð Frances Irene Evans, 78, of Ashland, widow of Hirman Evans, died Monday morning at Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation following an extended illness.
She was born June 4, 1929 at Logan County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Elmer and Nannie Mar Shaw Thompson.
Funeral services were held Friday at 1 p.m. at Preston Family Funeral Home of Ashland. Rev. Follitt Abdon officiated the service. Burial followed in the McCalvin Cemetery.
