Vergie Mae Lewis Cassidy
1929-2008
CANTON, OH – Mrs. Vergie Mae Lewis Cassidy, age 78, of Canton, Ohio passed away Wednesday morning, March 26, at her residence.
Mrs. Cassidy was born August 20, 1929 in Elliott County, a daughter of the late John and Gertie Stephens Lewis.
In addition to her parents, Vergie is preceded in death by two infant sons; and two brothers, John Lewis and Thurman Lewis.
Vergie was a lifelong homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, Vernon Cassidy, Sr. of Canton, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Vernon Cassidy, Jr. and Brenda; two daughters, Kimberly Cassidy and Joy Jean Cassidy all of Canton, Ohio; one brother, Clyde Lewis of Canton, Ohio; three sisters, Betty Salyers and Nannie Spears both of Sandy Hook, and Mary Cassidy of Fairbourn, Ohio; two granddaughters, Shannon Flescher and Tracie Cassidy both of Canton, Ohio; and one great-grandson, Kenneth Brady Flescher of Canton, Ohio; along with an extended host of family and friends who will sadly mourn her passing.
Funeral service were held 1 p.m. Friday, March 28, in the chapel of the Waddell and Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Brother Timmy Sexton officiated the service. Burial followed in the Lewis Family Cemetery on Neil Howards Creek in Elliott County.
John Litton, Mark Litton, Johnathon Litton, Brandon Sexton, Michael Cassidy, and Virgil Spears served as pallbearers.
Mary Jane Smith Brown
1965 - 2008
GRAYSON - Mary Jane Smith Brown, 43, Grayson, Kentucky, wife of Raymond Scott Brown, passed away Tuesday, March 25th, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Kentucky. She was born February 7th, 1965, daughter Paul J. and Bonnie D. Prince Smith.
Mary Jane was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker, and worked in retail/cashier. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Mary Jane is survived by:, her husband; two children, son, Andrew, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, and daughter, Asia Brown Bends, of Grayson, Kentucky; grandchildren, Elijah and Brooklyn; a brother, John (Bobbie Smith, Crane Creek Road, Grayson, Kentucky; three sisters, Elenor (Norman) Cook, Boonscamp, Kentucky, Cathy (Keith) Adkins and Alice (Mike) Lederer, both of Crane Creek Road, Grayson, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 28th, at 2:00, at Grandview Church of God, 4546 Sherwood Drive, Ashland, Kentucky, Pastor Danny Goins, officiating.
Friends may call, at the church, from 10:30 am until the time of the Funeral service, at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park, Ashland, Kentucky.

Mamie Alice Hall Harris
1920 – 2008
GRAYSON - Mamie Alice Hall Harris, 87 of Grayson, departed this world at the Community Hospice in Ashland on March 31, 2008 with her loving family by her side.
Mrs. Harris was born August 24, 1920, in Fleming County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late M. K. and Lona Rice Hall of Fleming County. She was a member of the Olive Hill United Methodist Church. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. J. C. Harris. The Harris’s spent their entire life working in The United Methodist Church in the Ashland and Maysville District ministering for the Lord.
She was preceded in death by 6 brothers, Milford Hall, Malon Hall, M. Bill Hall, Mack Hall, Marcus Fred Hall and Marion Lee Hall and three sisters, Mary Harris, Dora Kidd and Myrtle Watson, all of Fleming County.
She is survived by one son; James A. and (Dianne) Harris, two daughters, Lucille and (Noah) Gregory and Beulah Taylor and the late L.C. Taylor, all of Grayson. Grandchildren; Alicia Taylor of Means, Kentucky, Christopher and (Debbie) Harris of Grayson, Cameron and (Erin) Gregory Samaria, Michigan, Kristin and (Keith) Naszradi of Lambertville, Michigan and Michael Taylor of Jacksonville, Florida. Great-grandchildren; Megan, Mathew and Mitchell Porter of Means, Kentucky and LaShae Naszradi of Lambertville, Michigan and Alex and Brant Harris of Grayson.
She is also survived by two sister-in-law, Monnie Hall of Morehead, Kentucky and Mable Hall of Dayton, Ohio and by a special nephew, Hollie Harris and his wife, Jorene of Bean Station, Tennessee and lots of nieces and nephews and special friends; Tom, Jennifer and Jarid Mattingly of Olive Hill.
Pall Bearers for Mrs. Harris include Christopher Harris, Cameron Gregory, Mathew Porter, Jarid Mattingly, George Kiser and Keith Nazradi. Honorary Pall Bearers; Hollie Harris, Eugene Hall, Mitchell Porter and Tom Mattingly.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 3rd , 11:00 am at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Friends may call from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, April 2nd at the funeral Home.

Dorothy Erwin Tackett

BAZETTA, OHIO - Dorothy Erwin Tackett, 82, of Bazetta died 11:22 PM Monday March 24, 2008 at the Community Skilled Healthcare Center following a brief illness.
She was born Feb.28, 1926 in Olive Hill, KY the daughter of Herbert and Roma (Burton) Erwin.
A Warren area resident since 1948 coming from Kentucky, Dorothy retired from St. Joseph’s Hospital where she worked in the dietary dept.
A caring homemaker she was a former member of the Bazetta Christian Church and a member of the Social Order of Beauceant Warren Assembly #77.
She was preceded in death by her former husband Vern Tackett whom she married in 1948 and 6 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a son Steve Tackett of Bazetta, daughter Kim (Tim) Weeks of Washington, MI, and 7 nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was cremated and there will be a memorial service 1:00 PM Friday March 28, 2008 at the Hillside Cemetery Chapel in Bazetta. Roberts-Clark Chapel handled the arrangements.

Birdie Hale Shartzer
1936 - 2008
GRAYSON - Birdie Shartzer, 72 of Grayson, passed away Friday at her residence. She was born March 26,1936 ,in Carter County, a daughter of the late Fred and Minnie Thomas Hale.
She was a retired postal worker. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Grayson.
She is survived by her husband , Samuel Shartzer, Grayson, two daughters, Eva Marie Waggoner of Grayson and Amelia Shartzer Ruth of Grayson. Four grandchildren; Amber Leigh Carper, Samuel Aaron Pennington, Laura Ellen Walker, and Ryan Franklin Brown. Two great grandchildren, Darrah Trace Carper, Thomas Aaron Curtis Pennington.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.
Graveside services will be conducted Monday, March 31st, at 3:00pm at the East Carter County Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends after 4:00pm Monday at her residence, 125 South Hord Street Grayson.Arrangements by the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson.

SALT LICK - Alice Katherine Whitston, 82, of 183 Iles Mill Rd., Salt Lick, passed away Sunday March 30, 2008 at Ridgeway Manor Nursing Home in Owingsville after an extended illness.
Mrs. Whitston was born March 31, 1925 at Friendship, Ohio, the daughter of the late Pearl S. and Maude Tabor Wamsley. She was retired from the South Dakota Department Of Social Services and was the widow of the late LaVaughn V. Whitston.
Survivors include 1 son, Richard Whitston of Lexington, 2 daughters, Cheryl McKenzie of Olympia and Yvonne Gritzner of Brookings, South Dakota, 1 sister, Jane Quinn of Richmond, VA, 4 grandchildren, Scott and Kevin McKenzie and Marissa and Monica Hermsen and 4 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted Thursday April 3 at 11:00 AM at St. Julies Catholic Church in Owingsville with Father Jerry Dorn officiating. Burial will follow in Olive Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Powell Funeral Home in Salt Lick will be caring for arrangements.

GREENUP – Richard Keith Willis, 36, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 24, in Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Willis was born September 23, 1971 in Ashland, son of Georgia Harper and the late Gerrell Willis. Funeral services were conducted on Friday, March 28, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Danny Brown. Burial followed in the Huffman Cemetery in Ironhill.

ELLIOTT COUNTY - Danny B.”Duck” Childers, 43 of Elliott County passed away suddenly in Spartanburg, SC. after a sudden illness. Graveside services were conducted Monda,y March 31, 1 pm at the Hall Family Cemetery on Canoe Run, Tommy Harris, minister. Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson was in charge of arrangements.

ASHLAND - Trenna Alice Suttle, age 80, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday morning in Community Hospice in Ashland. Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 28, 2 pm at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Fred Wiles, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens in Grayson.
Mollie Jean Johnson
1934-2008
WESTWOOD - Mollie Jean Johnson, 73, of Westwood, widow of Tilsman J. Johnson, died Saturday evening at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness. She was born April 3, 1934 at Boyd County, a daughter of the late Andy and Pauline Sanders Cheek. Funeral services will be Thursday, at 11 a.m. by Rev. Roger Bonzo at Preston Family Funeral Home, Ashland. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery.
