Carter County Service Unit of the Salvation Army is seeking volunteer bell ringers during the annual Kettle Drive scheduled for November 17 through December 20, on Mondays through Saturdays. Groups such as scouts, youth groups, local civic groups, youth and adult Sunday School classes, individuals, and businessmen and women, are all invited to sign up for a shift to ring the bell at K Mart in Grayson. Those ringing the bell should be 18 years old or accompanied by an adult. Hours for ringing the bell are 4 to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays. Evenings can be broken down into two or three hour shifts, and Saturdays may be divided into three or four hour blocks. Groups wishing to be involved this year are asked to call the office of Donna Lucas at Prichard Family Resource Center, at 474-7680.

The annual Sunny, Inc. fruitcake sale has begun. The two-pound Benson Old Home Cakes are by now a Holiday Tradition for many. The price of the cakes will be $11. Cakes are available at Commercial Bank, James Family Outfitters, Wiggles and Giggles Daycare Center and law offices of Robert L. Caummisar and MaLenda Haynes. Proceeds of the sale are used in taking a number of children, whose names are provided by Project Merry Christmas, on a shopping spree. For additional information contact: Robert L. November 20: The Board of Architectural Review will have a meeting on Thursday, November 20 at 7 p.m. at the Olive Hill Fire Department building.
November 20: The FIVCO Long Term Care Ombudsman Advisory Council meet on Thursday, November 20 at 2 p.m. at the offices of the FIVCO ADD, located at 32 FIVCO Court, Grayson. The meeting is open to the public.
November 20: East Carter will host a Unite-to-Read night on Thursday, November 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at East Carter Middle School Gymnasium. This is a program for elementary aged children.
November 20: The Olive Hill High School Alumni and Friends Association will be holding a monthly meeting on Thursday, November 20, at 7 at the Olive Hill High School gymnasium. All members are urged to attend.
November 22: There will be a benefit held for Clara Bradford - to help with funeral costs for husband John Bradford - on November 22 at the Oldtown Fire Department from 1-5 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door. There will be live music, food and refreshments, and items for auction.
November 29: Annual Christmas Giveaway will be held Saturday, November 29, 10 a.m. until noon. It will be at James Chapel Community Holiness Church, located 2 1/2 miles past West Carter High School on the left. Toys, household items, menÕs, womenÕs, and childrenÕs clothing will be given away.
December 1: A Veterans Benefits Field Representative will be at the Carter County Courthouse in Grayson, on Monday, December 1 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Veterans and their dependents will receive assistance filing for Federal and State veterans benefits. This service is provided free of charge by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. To apply, veterans need to furnish copies of pertinent documentation to verify eligibility. For further information, please call toll free 1-866-244-8970 to speak with a Veterans Benefits Field Representative.
December 3: The Carter County Retired Teacher's Association will meet Wednesday, December 3 at Carter Caves State Park Lodge. The CCRTA will hold their Christmas Auction after the meeting. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. The Auction will be approximately at 12 p.m. Donations of items for the auction are greatly appreciated. Everyone is invited to attend. All proceeds from the auction goes to the CCRTA Educational Fund. The CCRTA gives both WCHS and ECHS a $500 scholarship to a graduating student going into education. In case of inclement weather, meaning, there is no school in Carter County, the meeting and the auction will be held Wednesday, December 10.
December 3-6: Kentucky Christian University's "Feast of Christmas" is scheduled for Dec. 3-6, 6:30 p.m. with a Saturday matinee at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $37 each. For more information call 474-3281.
December 5: New Haven Freewill Baptist Church will be holding a soup bean dinner and cake auction held on December 5 at 5 p.m. at Rt. 504 Fire Department. Admission will be $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 3-12. It will be free for children 2 years old and under. For more information call 286-6602 or 738-4208. All proceeds go to construction of the Fellowship Hall.
December 6: East Carter Middle School will host "Christmas Around the World Festival of Trees" 6-9 p.m. Saturday, December 6. Admission is free. Tickets will be sold for the Shriner's Polar Express with proceeds going to their children's transportation fund. Christmas trees and Christmas baskets will be auctioned off in the gym. Any business, person or church wanting to sponsor a tree or hallway can call Shari Adams at 475-9831.
December 6 & 7: The Second "Christmas Tour of Homes" sponsored by the Ladies of the Highlands Museum will be held Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7. We will provide shuttle service and refreshments from the Community Bellefonte Presbyterian Church, and will have three times the vans this year. Tickets go on sale on October 1, and will be available at the museum and from members of the Ladies of the Highlands.
December 7: The First Annual Snowflake Pageant will be held at West Carter High School on December 7 at 2 p.m. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. Register by November 29 and receive $10 off fee. Formal wear or Sunday best and a Christmas outfit will be the attire. Girls ages 0-16 and boys ages 0-4.
