Olive Hill City Council met last Tuesday to discuss ongoing infrastructure projects and the specifics of the current police department budget.
Council unanimously approved $110,754.32 in grant expenditures for the Biggs Hill and Pleasant Valley water projects.
Funding for these projects comes from coal severance tax funds which are typically used to help finance local infrastructure upgrades.
A concrete timetable as to when these projects might be finished was not disclosed.
Council also discussed the current state of the police department budget, the topic of heated debate since pay raises were recently approved.
Council member Kenny Fankell questioned Police Chief Bobby Hall about the continued amount of overtime hours being logged by the department.
“There can’t be any more overtime or the budget is going to be in deep trouble,” Fankell said.
Hall countered, however, stating that according to his figures, the department’s expenditures are almost identical to those tallied at the same time last year.
The chief also added that, given the addition of a recent academy graduate to the police force, he expects little to no overtime now that the department is fully staffed.
In other business, Council unanimously approved the previous month’s financial statements, as well as $1,000 for the Carter County division of Kentucky Teen Court.
Since the newly-elected Council will take office on Jan. 1, the Dec. 18 meeting will be the last for outgoing members Linda Lowe and Tony Williams.
That session will convene at 6 p.m. at the senior citizens center.
