Jan. 9, 2013 — Olive Hill fire and police departments and Carter County Emergency Management services were called to the scene as students were ushered from West Carter High School early Wednesday afternoon.
“We felt it necessary to evacuate the students from the school this afternoon,” said principal John Baumgardner when questioned about the situation.
Baumgardner indicated that he was unable to provide any further details as to the specific events that necessitated the evacuation.
A reliable source close to the situation, however, informed the Journal-Times that the students had been evacuated in response to a bomb threat found on a note in the school’s hallway.
According to the source, the note indicated that the bomb would detonate at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. As of 2:45 p.m., no detonation had occurred and police and fire crews began the process of clearing the building.
