Carter County team wins award at LEGO Tournament

Dec. 11, 2013 — The Carter County 4H Lego Raiders Team won third place in the Robot Performance Competition at the FIRST LEGO League Regional Tournament hosted by Ashland Community and Technical College on Dec. 7.

FIRST LEGO is a robotics program designed to get youth ages nine to 14 excited about science and technology.  The teams work on projects that include building robots and designing solutions to real-world problems. This year’s competition topic is Nature’s Fury.

ACTC started the tournament in order to make the team building focus on science and technology available to area youth, and 12 teams of area youth ages nine to fourteen were in the competition.

“This was a great start,” said Karen Coburn, event coordinator and ACTC Manager of External Education Programs and event coordinator. “We plan to make the tournament an annual event and hope to have even more teams competing next year.”

Raider team members include Riley Weaver, Jayln Kiser, Emma Thompson and Eli Davis.  Gerria Waugh is the team coach, and Rebecca Konopka is the assistant coach.
