A surprise loss for the West Carter boys soccer team Tuesday night against Greenup County would put a sooner end to their season than expected, suffering a 2-1 defeat in the first round of the 62nd District soccer tournament.

High energy opened the match with a bang and resulted in three back-to-back goals between the two teams within 15 minutes, but those would be the only goals of the night for these teams.

An overabundance of physical play in the match left many questioning what happened to the promising West Carter team. Struggling through foul after foul, these highly driven and physical teams entered the second half with Greenup up 2-1.

The second half of the match resulted in a scoreless battle that left the Comets wondering what went wrong.

West Carter Head Coach Max Hammond was not pleased with the outcome of the match.

“I’m highly disappointed with the way it turned out, obviously. The first time we played them, we outshot them 30 to 1,” Hammond said. “The second time we played them, we beat them 4 to 1. This time, we outshot them quite a bit. But hats off to them; they put a couple in the back of the net tonight and we couldn’t,”

Even with the loss, Hammond and his Comets wrapped up the program’s best season in its four-year history at 12-8.
