Board of Education covers monthly business

Oct. 17, 2012 —

The Carter County Board of Education held its monthly meeting on Monday. The Board addressed regular monthly business, with most of the focus going toward current construction projects.

Carter Supt. Ronnie Dotson reported that the school nursing program, which had been under the direction of the local health department for 20+ years, was no longer in the schools.

“They have opted to pull out of the local schools,” Dotson told the Board.  “We appreciate them very much.  However, they are the only place eligible to bill Medicaid, but it is not something they are willing to pursue at this time.  They will be looking into it again next month.”
Construction at Carter Elementary is on schedule.

The changes to the fire vault removed the original water meter from the plumbing bid package and

placed the relocated fire meter in the fire protection bid package. The change cost an additional $14,560 on the project.

Standard screens for the windows were requested, which would have cost the Board an additional $6,200, but was not approved.  A change in the type of light fixtures saved the project $2,000.

The bleacher replacement project at East and West Carter high schools is ahead of schedule.  Sam Howard of Trace Creek Construction reported that the projects should be completed by the second week of November at the latest.

A slight change to the seating plan for the film platforms cost the Board an additional $8,000.  New surface paint on the mezzanine floors was also requested, but not approved.

Construction at Tygart Creek Elementary School is back on schedule.  Howard reported a $24,572.74 credit to the project after a segmental retaining wall was deemed unnecessary.  Howard also said that the difficulty with the roof on the project should not show any additional cost to the Board.

Supt. Dotson also addressed the anticipated release of school assessment scores.
