Olive Hill mayor proposes temporary closure of pool

By Joe Lewis - Staff Writer

Feb. 27, 2013 — Olive Hill Mayor Kenny Fankell has suggested that City Council consider closing the city's swimming pool this summer to reduce costs.

According to figures Fankell presented at last Tuesday’s meeting, the city suffered a loss of $23,817.53 last year in pool operations and attendance has consistently dwindled in recent years.

“I hate to do it but there comes a time when you have to take care of business and I'm afraid that time has come,” Fankell said.

The mayor was quick to clarify that he is only suggesting temporary closure of the pool to explore cost savings to the city and to determine what repairs are needed to return the facility to good working order.

“I ask that you please reconsider closing the pool,” said Carol James, who said she felt that pool attendance had dwindled because of troublesome people loitering at the park.

“This item wasn't advertised on our agenda so I think out of respect to the community we should wait a month before we make any final decisions,” said Council member Angie Johnson Fultz.

Fankell and the Council agreed to table the issue until next month in order to explore all available options.
