June 19, 2013 — The Carter County Board of Education voted Monday to award a one percent pay raise for all district employees in the upcoming year.
Supt. Ronnie Dotson praised the board’s action in today’s “challenging economic climate”.
“I want to commend the board for doing this and showing that we value all of our employees who work so hard for our children,” said Dotson. “This is actually the second year in a row we’ve been able to give pay raises, and there aren’t many school districts in the state that can say that.”
Employee pay won’t be the only cost increase for the school district this year, however.
The district was forced to seek a new insurance provider because the Kentucky School Boards Insurance Trust (KSBIT) will dissolve at the end of the current fiscal year.
Finding a new provider has been difficult and expensive, according to Treasurer Andy Lyons. “There are only about three companies in the state that are able to provide insurance to us but the one willing to pick us up was Ohio Casualty,” Lyons said.
The new insurance program proposed by Ohio Casualty will cost $285,000, just over a $100,000 increase from the premium paid as a KSBIT member.
With seemingly no other option for coverage, the board unanimously accepted the new insurance plan.
In other business, construction updates were presented for Tygart Creek Elementary and Carter City Elementary, both of which are on schedule for occupancy this fall.
Demolition is underway in the gyms at East and West Carter high schools to replace the playing floors and the lower level bleachers, the second phase of a total renovation plan for both facilities.
The next regular meeting of the Board of Education is set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 15, at Tygart Creek Elementary School.
