City Council requests special meeting

Oct. 3, 2012 — Four members of the Olive Hill City Council sent a letter to Mayor Danny Sparks on Monday requesting a special meeting to discuss police department classification and pay scale.

The letter, which was signed by Jerry Callihan, Kenny Fankell, Allen Stapleton and Tony Williams, calls for a special meeting to be held Monday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Olive Hill Senior Citizens Center.

KRS 61.823 (2) states that the presiding officer or a majority of the members of the public agency may call a special meeting.

Police Chief Bobby Hall addressed the mayor and Council about the police department’s budget during the Sept. 18 regular meeting, noting that the city has a difficult time recruiting and keeping officers because of low salaries.

Hall asked the Council to consider pay raises, particularly in light of the fact that some officers choose not to participate in the city’s employee benefit program, meaning that money should theoretically be available for salary increases.

Sparks communicated to Hall during that meeting that if he developed a proposal, the Council would hold a special meeting to consider potential pay raises for the department.
