Girls 16th Region First Round: Ashland, Fleming move on

March 5, 2014 — The 16th Region Semifinals are set as Ashland and Fleming County will meet in Thursday night’s semifinals after winning their opening round games.

Fleming County used a decisive 11-3 run to end the third quarter to help the Lady Panthers advance over West Carter 48-25.  Fleming (20-10) earned their second ever trip to the semifinals since 2010-11 season.

Martina Lytle’s 13 points and seven rebounds led the way for the Lady Panthers.  Fleming’s Christie Peterson had 11 points and Journey Steward scored ten points.

West Carter (11-15) got six points each from Lexie Berry and Leatha Reynolds.  The Lady Comets was 9-for-43 from the field.

In the first game, Haley Sue Foutch’s free throws with 52.4 seconds left gave the Kittens just enough cushion as they advanced to the 16th Region semifinals with a __ win over Lewis County.

The Kittens (22-8) would outscore the Lions 19-12 in the third quarter and would never look back, forcing 10 turnovers and limiting Lewis to just seven field goals in the second half.  Lewis shot 17-of-45 for the game.

The Lady Lions Jaycey Fite gave Lewis its last lead at 25-24 just before halftime, hitting a three-point basket as time expired.  She scored nine points.  Lewis was led in scoring on Savannah Anderson’s double-double of 14  points and 11 rebounds.

McKenzie Thompson’s Field goal with under three minutes remaining stopped a five-plus minute scoring drought for the Lady Lions.

Foutch would lead three Ashland players in double figures with 17 points and eight rebounds.  Junior Alexis Robinson scored 13 points and also grabbed eight boards.  Shelby Gransberry had 12 points and seven rebounds.  Ashland shot 18-of-41 (43.9 percent) in the win.

The semifinals will begin Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.  Russell will face No. 8 East Carter.  Ashland and Fleming County will play at 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after the first game.
