AT&T to hire 140 workers at East Park

May 22, 2013 — EAST PARK — For the next few months, AT&T officials have announced they will hire 20 people per month until they have filled 140 customer-service positions at the East Park Call Center in the industrial park between Grayson and Ashland.

The new customer-service representatives will support AT&T customers nationwide, according to an announcement by the company. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear said the new jobs represent an important portion of the plan for economic recovery in the state.



“In the past few years, AT&T has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in wireless networks across the Commonwealth,” Beshear said. “With continued investment and 140 new jobs like these, AT&T continues to prove itself as a valuable contributor to Kentucky’s overall economic strength and growth.”



Starting this month, AT&T officials say they expect to hire about 20 new employees each month through the end of 2013. Once hired, new employees will go through an extensive seven-week training program. According to a statement from AT&T, “Ongoing training is a core piece of AT&T’s culture — promoting not only industry knowledge but also career development for AT&T employees.”



The hiring plan is hailed as good news for those who monitor Kentucky’s economic progress. “Any time a company announces new jobs in a community, it’s a good day,” Hal Goode, president and CEO of the Kentucky Association of Economic Development, said. “It’s especially positive news when companies with a history of investing in Kentucky are able to provide new career opportunities for our talented workforce. That is why we encourage Kentucky legislators to take steps to modernize our telecommunications laws to encourage companies like AT&T to quickly grow and expand their business here in order to bring even more jobs to our Commonwealth across all sectors.”



Since opening in 2011, the East Park call center has continued to grow and currently provides work for more than 500. The center’s staff handles inbound customer sales and service calls, such as billing issues and technical support, for customers across the country.



State Rep. Tanya Pullin said, “I am pleased that these new jobs are coming to AT&T’s East Park facility. This announcement brings 140 new jobs to Greenup County, jobs with good benefits and an opportunity for a career path in one of America’s largest corporations. I appreciate that AT&T is making this commitment to our community even in these difficult economic times.”



State Sen. Walter Blevins echoed Pullin’s thoughts.



“I’ve watched this call center grow over the years and am very excited to see local citizens embarking on new careers in the telecommunications industry,” Blevins said. “Jobs in technology are crucial for Eastern Kentucky ,and I’m glad to see even more opportunities opening up in our area.”



 AT&T employs more than 3,000 in Kentucky and has invested more than $650 million from 2010-12 in its wireless and wireline networks across the Commonwealth.



“This announcement demonstrates our commitment to providing top-notch customer service to our customers nationwide, as well as good jobs in Eastern Kentucky,” said John Gross, Director of the AT&T East Park Call Center. “These are good jobs with wages and benefits that are among the best in the nation.”
