New book features Sellers’ technical writings

May 15, 2013 — A new book featuring turn of the century technical writings and journals by aviation pioneer Matthew B. Sellers soon will be available for purchase.

"The Technical Writings of Matthew B. Sellers - Aviation Pioneer/Technical Editor Aeronautics Magazine 1908-1915” was compiled by his granddaughter, Barbara Sellers, and features material that has not been publicly accessible for decades.

“These are never seen before by our public in this era and are most fascinating, as they shaped the aviation world as we know it today,” said the author.

Matthew Sellers is renowned locally and nationally for his numerous contributions to the aviation industry -- most notably for his invention of retractable landing gear.

The 140-page book contains 60 articles obtained from the Smithsonian that Sellers wrote for Aeronautics Magazine, some of which are more than a hundred years old.

“They were poorly scanned and I was not allowed to photograph the originals, as they were in bad shape. I edited them as best as I could to put them in this book,” Sellers said. “I think people will find these articles to be amazing. The diagrams are simply fascinating.”

The book costs $20 and Barbara Sellers will be available to sign copies from noon to 2 p.m. at Flashback Flaming in Olive Hill on Friday, May 24, and on Saturday, May 25, outside Webb Law Office on the corner of Main and Hord streets in Grayson.

Joe Lewis can be reached at jlewis@journal-times.com or by telephone at 286-4201.
