Grayson police officer fired

June 19, 2013 — Grayson City Council met in special session Monday night to discuss the fate of police officer Chris Yavorcik.

The three-year Grayson police officer and former Kentucky State Police trooper was arrested last Wednesday in Ashland and charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

Yavorcik was immediately placed on administrative leave.

After spending 15 minutes in executive session, the Council returned to report that no action was taken.

Councilman Duane Suttles asked that the minutes reflect that personnel matters fall under the mayor’s authority.

Mayor George Steele said that Yavorcik would be terminated.

Major Todd Kelley of the Ashland Police Department told the Journal-Times last week that a call was received at APD on June 12 about a Grayson police cruiser leaving the roadway and striking a tree on Crook Street.

Witnesses told police the person driving then backed out and left the scene.

After a short investigation, APD arrested Yavorcik at his residence in Ashland. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

Mayor Steele said that $5,770 in damage was done to the cruiser.

The mayor confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Yavorcik had been fired, effective that day.
