Gallery starts year with strong showing

By Joe Lewis - Staff Writer

Feb. 5, 2014 — The Grayson Gallery and Art Center kicked off 2014 with a strong and diverse lineup at its monthly Final Friday show.

The “Bringing Artists Together” event was well attended and featured 56 pieces by numerous artists throughout the region, including several entries from Morehead State University students.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with the turnout tonight. Our attendance just seems to keep growing each month,” said Gallery Director Dan Click.

“The quality of the work we are getting is very strong. There are so many talented artists in the region and they’ve really begun to buy in to what we’re doing here,” he added.

This show featured some of the strongest pieces of artwork to date.

The influx of work from Morehead State students along with the marked increase in quality from regular contributors made this event perhaps one of the most successful since the gallery’s inception.

The most popular piece of the evening among attendees was by John Sellers, however, recipient of the people’s choice award for his oil painting entitled “Summer Dreams” which features silhouettes of young boys fishing against a colorful sunset backdrop.

In addition to being the fan favorite of the evening, Sellers received a $100 cash prize for the work.

February’s gallery event is entitled “Peace and Love” and looks to play upon the prominent themes that accompany the Valentine’s Day holiday.

Artists over 18 years of age may submit up to three pieces in any media and any subject that resembles peace and love. The GGAC Board will give an award to the piece that best meets the theme.

Work will be accepted at the gallery on Feb. 22 and Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or during other hours by appointment.

The show will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Grayson Gallery and Art Center on the corner of Third Street and Carol Malone Boulevard.
