Health Department director search moves forward

June 20, 2014 —

The search for a new director for the Little Sandy District Health Department is once again underway.

The department’s board of directors unanimously voted Wednesday night to resume the hiring process for the position, ending a year-long delay in filling the vacancy.

Now that we see we have it in our budget to pay the salary for the position, I think it’s time for us to move forward with finding a new director,” said Dr. Kari Shields, who serves as board chairperson.

The board will now choose from a registry of eligible applicants that has been on file in Frankfort since the position was first advertised last September.

Those names will now be distributed to board members, who will have 90 days from the date the registry is pulled to make a hiring decision.

Paula Thornberry has served as interim director for the past year, inheriting a department that was facing severe financial issues.

Under her management, however, the health department has turned a potential shortfall of $400,000 into a projected surplus of $113,000 this fiscal yearthough not without casualties.

Lack of revenue forced employee layoffs and the closure two satellite clinics to keep the department’s doors open.

Thornberry stated a recent meeting that she is ready to transition out of the role and hand over the reigns to the new director.

Little Sandy’s board of directors will hold a special meeting Monday night at 6:30 p.m. to review applications and determine a list of finalists to be invited for an interview.
