Jan. 22, 2014 — Grayson City Council has approved a measure to annex 1.5 acres of property on the corner of North Midland Trail and Interstate Drive.
The first reading of the ordinance was conducted at Council’s regular meeting last Tuesday and the second reading was done at a special meeting last Thursday.
The recently-developed section of land is home to the Grayson office of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, which administers several public assistance programs, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and unemployment benefits.
By annexing the land, the City of Grayson will be able to collect its occupational payroll tax from about 30 state employees working there.
The city also will collect property taxes on the land as well, because it is privately-owned by William Fowler who leases it to the state.
By bringing the land into the city limits, the city government assumes responsibility for maintenance of roadways leading to or from the property, as well as utility easements.
The move also sets up the potential for further annexation of additional land located on the Midland Trail corridor should future development occur in the area.
Council did not discuss any immediate plans for further annexation, however.
