Jan. 30, 2013 — Staff members at the Olive Hill Times and Grayson Journal-Enquirer and their sister paper, The Morehead News, received 10 statewide awards, including two first places, in the 2012 Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers competition sponsored by the Kentucky Press Association.
The awards were announced last weekend during KPA’S 144th annual convention in Louisville.
The three newspapers comprise the Morehead News Group of Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc., of Montgomery, Ala.
The Olive Hill Times took first place among small weeklies for Best Sports Page/Section which was designed by James Carr, former production manager.
The group’s other first place went to publisher Keith Kappes who received the Best Editorial award in competition with other multi-weekly newspapers in the state.
Other awards for the Olive Hill Times included second places for Best Editorial (Kappes), Best Investigative Story or Series (Joe Lewis), and Best Spot News Picture (Mike Barker) and a third place for Best Column (Kappes).
The Journal-Enquirer received a second place award for Best Sports Column (Stevens) and a third place for Best Picture Essay (Leeann Akers, Crystal Damron and Joe Lewis).
The Morehead News also won third place awards for Best Sports Picture (Grant Stevens) and Best Sports Page/Section (Carr).
“These statewide awards confirm that we are producing high quality, community journalism at our newspapers in Carter and Rowan counties,” said Kappes. “We’re proud of our staff members who have earned the recognition of their peers.”
