Police nab car thief after chase

April 30, 2014 — A West Virginia man is facing multiple charges after leading police on a high speed chase.

Darrell Walters, 49, of Rainville Fayette, was arrested last week and is facing four counts of wanton endangerment of a police officer, one count of third degree assault of a police officer, operating a vehicle under the influence, aggravated offense, fleeing or evading police, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, driving without a license, and second degree criminal mischief.

Carter County Sheriff’s Deputy James Frint said an “attempt to locate” call was dispatched last Tuesday for a 1996 Buick Regal, which had been stolen from Larry Fannin's car lot in Morehead. The car belonged to a employee.

“I observed him near McCoy Drive in Olive Hill,” Frint said. “He was traveling close to a Jeep, and all over the road.”

Frint, along with Kentucky State Police Trooper Holman, Olive Hill Police Chief Bobby Hall, and Deputy Charles Jones chased Walters east on US 60 for about 12 miles before he ran out of gas.

At one point, Frint maneuvered his cruiser in front of Walters in an attempt to slow the chase. However, Walters rammed the cruiser and was able to continue.

Walters was arrested after police extracted him from the locked vehicle. He is housed in the Carter County Detention Center and no bail has been set.
