April 30, 2014 — Trail enthusiasts from throughout the region made the trek to Carter County on Saturday to participate in Olive Hill Trail Town's trial run.
“Rough estimates have us at close to 50 trail riders taking part. And that's in addition to the hikers and the kayakers,” said Debbie Baker Harman, Trail Town Task Force coordinator.
“Overall, I think the event went extraordinarily well,” she added.
The final tally of participants was not immediately available Saturday because all of the surveys filled out by participants had not been collected.
According to surveys on hand Saturday afternoon, a mix of horseback riders, hikers and kayakers all took part in the trial run, one of the final hurdles to be cleared in the city's quest for official Trail Town certification.
Tourism officials in Frankfort will review feedback from trail users and then make a determination concerning what steps the city needs to take next to achieve Trail Town status.
Certification is important to each Trail Town applicant because of the marketing assistance and grant eligibility to be provided by the state’s Office of Adventure Tourism.
