ECHS shooter accused in prison assault

April 16, 2014 — The gunman in the infamous 1993 East Carter High School shooting is facing criminal charges again after an alleged assault on a prison employee.

Officials at the Kentucky State Penitentiary say Gary Pennington attacked a food service employee last Saturday.

The employee, JoAnne Smith, was taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. She was discharged from the hospital on Sunday evening.

Pennington is serving a life sentence for killing his English teacher and a custodian back in 1993. He has been incarcerated since the incident and is now 38 years old.

The inmate has been placed in segregation at the prison pending both internal and outside charges.

Trooper First Class Jay Thomas of the Kentucky State Police said the KSP is investigating an assault on a food service worker at the penitentiary but declined to release the name of the alleged attacker or victim since the investigation is ongoing.

According to the Kentucky Offender Lookup, Pennington would be eligible for parole in January 2018.
