Sweeping up at CCA: Heart, Hands and Feet committee kicks off program

Nov. 13, 2013 — You have to start somewhere.

Volunteers with the Heart, Hands and Feet (HHF) committee started in some dusty rooms at Carter Christian Academy.

The group, which coordinates volunteer projects, was born from the community summit in August.

When they met Nov. 2 at the old Hitchins School to clean out several unused rooms, 48 individual volunteers representing 12 different community entities were on hand.

“This organization creates a great opportunity to reach out to those in need in the community, and young folks are excited to get active,” said HHF facilitator Mark Strother. “The CCA folks were floored by the volunteers. The leaders were almost in tears because they were so thankful for the effort,”

What was slated for a three-day project ended up taking the group just two hours to complete.

Janet Jenkins is on the HHF committee and said she was humbled by the pilot project.

“It was very humbling to see so many from the community working together for a common goal like that,” Jenkins said. “I hoped we would have 15-20 people, so it was great to see so many come out.”

Jenkins said she did receive some negative feedback about the project, since it was completed for a private Christian school.

“It was a need in the community,” she said. “They asked if we would be willing to help, and the committee voted to do so. Everyone in the community is welcome to come and we will vote on which projects we can complete. The children of CCA and their parents are also members of their community.”

In the future, the HHF committee hopes to facilitate a way for people in need to contact the group and make project requests.

“Then we can get the volunteers organized and the materials donated to complete the project,” Jenkins said.

The Heart, Hands and Feet committee is looking for another community need project. To make a request, attend the meeting Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Johnny's Pizza.
