Not all Grayson heroes are hometown boys

Oct. 16, 2013 — When the tones sound and dispatch alerts the need for assistance to any of the local volunteer fire departments, work and personal schedules play a part in availability.

The chances of the person in need knowing someone on the call is a very real possibility in Carter County.

There are a few faces that might not be recognized, like the Carter twins of Glouster, Ohio. Kameron and Brandon Carter are 21-year-old twins in their final year of nursing school at Kentucky Christian University.

Not only are these young men carrying a full class load, completing clinical hours, and working as emergency medical technicians in Lawrence County, Ohio, they also are active with the Grayson Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition, Kameron works with the Athens County EMS, while Brandon picks up extra time at Corning Fire and EMS, also in Ohio.

The twins have never taken anything lightly.

While students at Trimble High School, Kameron was class valedictorian while Brandon earned 11 varsity letters in various sports.

Currently, Brandon is the nursing class chaplain and Kameron is the class president. Both serve as class representatives of the student nursing organization (SNO).

Coming from a family where both parents served Southern Ohio as paramedics and a father who also serves as a firefighter, the boys knew early on that helping people is exactly what they wanted to do.

Kameron has been a firefighter since 2007, starting while in high school then relocating his volunteer service to Grayson when college time arrived. Brandon joined the GFD in November 2012.

The brothers are set to graduate in May after living in Grayson four years.

Brandon hopes to begin his nursing career in an ICU unit.

Kameron's sights are set on becoming a flight nurse, marrying fiance Brianne Nation soon after graduation and staying around Grayson for a while.
