New board member ready to serve

Oct. 9, 2013 — Lisa Ramey-Easterling, the newest member of the Carter County Board of Education, is a face many in her district recognize because of her longtime ties to the area.

The Carter City native attended Carter Elementary through eighth grade and was a member of the Class of 1989 at East Carter High School.

In addition to her local experience in public schools, Easterling recently received her bachelor’s degree in adult and technical education from Marshall University.

She was among five individuals who pursued the board position was left vacant when David Jessie stepped down to become facilities manager for the school district.

“All of those who interviewed were very strong and qualified applicants and I feel very honored to have been chosen to fill the position,” said Easterling.

“Our district's test scores have vastly improved over the last few years and we've just recently achieved proficient status. On top of that, we now have a National Blue Ribbon School. It's a very exciting time for me to come into this position,” she said.

Currently, she oversees all the student interns who come through the center and also heads a leadership development program.

“I have a strong personal connection to the school system because my children and I have been a part of it. I also feel my skills in training and development bring a lot to the table,” she said.

Easterling will serve the remainder of Jessie's term, which expires at the end of 2014. She indicated that she plans to run for the seat .

“I don't have a particular cause or agenda. I'm just committed to making sure that our schools achieve the very highest standard of excellence,” she said.
