Steele to seek third term as mayor

Feb. 26, 2014 — Grayson Mayor George Steele will run for a third term in office.

Although he says he intended to retire at the end of his second term, now he has a few more things to finish.

“I am really interested in new businesses coming to Grayson and new jobs coming to town,” Steele said. “I want to do everything I can to make that happen.”

Steele said he also hopes to see a new park built within city limits and is looking forward to seeing the new walking trail come to fruition within the next few months.

As the mayor begins his eighth year in office, he is particularly proud of how smoothly city government and City Council meetings are running.

“The biggest thing we have accomplished is the unity of the Council,” Steele said. “They come with no axes to grind, and make choices based on what is in the best interest of the people of the town. That is a sign of true progress- a single minded focus on what is best for this city.”

Steele hopes that, if the people of Grayson reelect him, he will be able to see even more growth within the city.

“This city government has shown the people how the government is supposed to work,” Steele said. “None of the issues we have faced have been detrimental to our ability to work together. We all demand of each other that every person who comes in with a problem, that they are respected and listened to.”

Steele said he is offended seeing turmoil within other elected bodies and meetings filled with conflict.

“I would not want to go through the pretense of being a leader if I had to lead by being rude and not listening to the people,” Steele said. “These offices have power, to benefit the people, not for personal gain.”

Steele said he came into the mayor's office in the same way he will one day leave it – poor and full of pride for his community.
