17 indicted

Feb. 19, 2014 — A Carter County grand jury handed down 17 indictments on Feb. 7, including theft and drug-related allegations and charges of crimes against children.

Christopher Shaffer, 40, of Grayson, faces five felony charges. He was indicted on one count of first degree sodomy, a Class B felony, for deviant sexual intercourse with a female under 16 years of age.

Shaffer also faces four class B felony indictments, including first degree sexual abuse of a female under 16 and three counts of second degree unlawful transaction with a minor.

According to the indictments, Shaffer “induced and assisted” three girls under the age of 16 with illegal controlled substance activity involving marijuana.

Shannon Wagoner, 32, of Grayson, was indicted on one count of first degree assault, a Class B felony. The indictment alleges that Wagoner intentionally assaulted a two-month-old infant on Jan. 5, creating grave risk of death and causing the child to suffer serious physical injury.

Nelson J. Clayton, 19, of Bowling Green, was indicted on one count of first degree sexual abuse, A Class D felony. Clayton is accused of subjecting a female under 16 years of age to contact by forcible compulsion.

Also indicted were:

Brett L. Griffith, 53, of Grayson, one count of first degree possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, heroin, a Class D felony.

Charles Thomas, 53, of Willard, one count of first degree trafficking in a Schedule 1 narcotic, heroin, a Class C felony, and one count of carrying a concealed and deadly weapon, a Class A misdemeanor

Byron Criswell, 39, of Grayson, one count of first degree possession of a controlled substance, heroin, and one count of firsts degree possession of a schedule II controlled substance, Oxycodone, both class D felonies.

Criswell also faces two Class A misdemeanor charges for third degree possession of a schedule IV controlled substance, Neurontin, and drug paraphernalia.

Cortney Howard, 26, of Grayson, one count of first degree possession of a schedule II controlled substance, Oxycodone, a Class D felony.
