Wet-dry voters get new polling place

Feb. 19, 2014 — Voters in the City of Olive Hill will go to a new polling place for the upcoming local option election on Tuesday, March 11.

Carter County Clerk Mike Johnston said all five city precincts will vote at the Senior Citizens Center in downtown Olive Hill.

Those precincts normally vote at West Carter Middle School at the east city limits but schools are expected to be in session that day.

Voters will determine if alcoholic beverages are to be sold legally within the city limits for the first time since 1937.

It will be Olive Hill’s first wet-dry election since July of 1971 when both Olive Hill and Grayson opted to remain dry.

However, Grayson residents voted their city “wet” in a special election last June.

Polls will be open on March 11 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The ballot question will be “Are you in favor of the sale of alcoholic beverages in Olive Hill?”

As of Tuesday’s press deadline, no group had registered with the state to raise and spend money for or against the issue.

Under Kentucky law, any group of at least three persons which spends $1,000 or more to influence the outcome of an election must register with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance in Frankfort.

Known officially as an “issues committee”, such a group must compile and submit records of campaign contributions of $100 or more and must report all expenses, just like an individual running for elective office.
