Feb. 19, 2014 —     Duvall and Moore Funeral Home may be a new business in Olive Hill but those at the helm have longtime ties to the area.

Jason Duvall and Jarrod Gilliam are the men behind the new business on Whitt Street -- both of whom have years of experience in and around the area.

“I’ve been in this industry for 15 years. I got my start at Oney-Henderson when my family was involved in the operations there,” said Duvall.

“I started in high school and took a large interest in the work. It was a career I could step into without leaving the area,” he added.

Gilliam’s path to the funeral industry took a different route, though.

“Growing up, I always wanted to be a firefighter and a paramedic. The funeral home director in Elliot County also was the captain of the fire department. So I would always end up helping him with odd jobs around the place when I could,” said Gilliam.

“I ended up helping him part time and then started washing cars and other sorts of things. The next thing I know I’m working at the visitations,” he added.

In addition to working at the funeral home now, Gilliam is finishing up his career with the ambulance service. After retiring, he plans to serve an apprenticeship under Duvall and eventually attend mortuary school.

Duvall currently serves as a deputy coroner in Carter County while Gilliam is a  deputy coroner in Rowan County.

Both men were motivated to start their operation in Olive Hill as a means of providing the community with more options for funeral services.

“After a lot of conversations with the public, we felt there was a need for another choice in the area,” said Duvall.
